Cummins West says to change the oil every 5,000-miles and nobody's engine will last longer than yours. I did my first oil change at 2,500, though.

With Rotella T or other quality fossilized critter based oils, 4000 to 5000 miles is good. Most people with Amsoil change filter at 4000 and oil at 7500. Amsoil says you can go a lot longer, but ther IS diesel fuel contamination and some ware particles get past the filter. Amsoil says its oil isn't effected as much by fuel contamination, but it is there, and it thins the oil with non-lubricating sludge, etc. And soot. I'm old fashioned, and to me more changes = less problems to fix. Oh, almost forgot: Use Amsoil 15W40 diesel oil, or heavy duty diesel oil if you tow anything, not 10W40.

Hi scary
I've got a '93 with 118,000 miles on it and have changed the oil at 6000 mile intervals supported by an oil analysis at each change. I use Amsoil 15W40 heavy duty full synthetic and have never a sample result indicate anything other than excellant readings. You indicated that you are using 10W40 - your might want to check the bottle - you should be using 15W40. There are some excellant conventional and blended synthetics available in that grade. I would stay in the 5000 to 6000 mile range and you should be OK.
Happy Trails

'93 Banks Power Pack, K&N air filter, BD Power Injectors and tweaked pump -027lbs boost unloaded.

I run the Amsoil 15w40 Diesel & Marine oil, Amsoil filter, and Amsoil bypass filter(BE-100). I try to change the oil and the full flow filter every 6K. I've run 7. 5 K once, had it analyzed. No fuel contamination or other bad stuff. 87K on engine, and it doesn't use any oil.

Just got the results of the sample of Amsoil 15W-40 Syn. oil from Blackstone Labs. This oil has been in the engine for one year with around 17,000 miles on it. The results: "0" antifreeze, <0. 5 fuel, "0. 0" water, "0. 5 insolubles (<0. 8 is good). Silicon was low (running K&N air filter), the only item out of range was iron content - 32 (average 23) but for length of time O. K. All other wear was at or below the averages. I change my stock oil filter every 5K and the Amsoil Bypass BE-110 once a year.

I change my oil every 200 engine hours. If I run that whole time in the city, that's about 3000 miles. If I run that whole time on the highway, it's about 8000 miles.

I analyze on every oil change and 3000 city miles looks just like 8000 highway miles. So, it really does depends on how you drive (this has been a real learning experience for me).

My analyses come back good enough that I'm thinking about running 250 hours next time (you can do the math on the miles if you want).

Oops, forgot to tell you I'm running plain old Valvoline Premium Blue 15W-40 (not the semi-synthetic).

Gene, here's the text as stated on the oil analysis report. "Iron wear was a little higher than what we typically see from this engine (see universal averages - 23), but certainly not high enough to indicate a problem. Actually, iron is normal, if you take into account how long this oil was in service.
