The dealer I used only dropped the pan and chaged the fluid. Cost was around 163. 00 . I would opt to use a independent shop that will flush it all out . Just make sure they use factory approved fluid

And make sure they don't flush it using a solvent... old fluid with new fluid only.

I have one that I have been servicing since new and hauls trailers every day. We have serviced it every 50,000 miles and now has 378,382 miles and never been rebuilt. No problems yet and owner is running a Edge box.

37000 and running smooth. Daily driver with occasional duty hauling a 4 horse living quarters trailer (13000 gross max). Mostly haul with 2 horseys. Due for a service.

Tradeing 6 speed for automatic for wife to drive

My wife hates my 6 speed because It hard to shift. When I have a hard time sometimes hitting a gear she lets me know. I brought a 16 shortbed home with a automatic and she drove It and like It and so did I. We ordered a new truck and should be here In a couple of weeks I hope. My 04 just sits In the garage getting dusty I guess. I got to take my CB out today plus my campers tie downs brackets.

I just turned 31K with no problems. Had my first service done at 30K and installed Goerend Bros. TC. The original TC was working OK but I wanted less slip and firmer shifts. It seems clear that the 48re is a well built and durable unit in the stock form. Routine maintenance and you're good to go.

30,000 and no problems. I pull a 580 ck case on a goose-neck occasionally, plus a 20' chrsit-craft, and some other trailers. So much for the crappy Dodge auto theory  ;) . It seems the t-shift and allisons are haveing far more failures... Doug

If you stay stock with the horsepower they will last a long time with regular service intervals. My friend has 3 Dodge cummins all autos. A 2000,2001 and 2003. They all pull 15k to 20k generators on a daily basis. The 2000 has 228,000mi and it is the original trans. The 2003 has 138,000 and no problems. Talk to allison owners and they will tell you the problems they have had,I think the Dodge transmission's are bullit proof untill you throw the horsepower and big time tourqe to them. By the way my buddy's 1995 cummins has 635,000 on her and still running strong with only one rear end and two manual transmission rebuilds. Gotta love that cummins we got.

06 info?

Hey troll3193 what is this about not being able to get into Tow/Haul while in O/D on the 06's? I thought you could go into O/D, the advantage over the 05's being that you can now turn the O/D off!

Ace, you are correct the 05's could not stay locked out of OD.

The 06 can go in T/H mode which holds gears longer before upshifting with a load and stay locked up while down shifting for a mild engine type brake effect, you can also put the brake on and tap the throttle to get it to down shift into a lower gear at higher rpm's. Can go to OD off mode, which allows it to stay in 3rd direct. Can run in normal configuration.
