Seems like 4 wheel drives are hard on suspension and steering parts. No doubt off-roading has it's price. My biggest problem with my 2 wheel (98 12v) was the factory put in the wrong ratio steering box as I have said on here many times. The reason I repeat is so everybody will become aware of it. Took me 7 years to find out why my Ram wandered all over the road. Had an article not appeared in TDR written by Mr. Quigley explaining it I would be still tearing my hair out. Alignment shops don't know about it and the dealers would never admit it if they did know. Solving problems is what TDR is all about and I am truly greatful. It is like the old days and old men like me remember people would stop and offer to help. Criminals changed that so now we help each other through TDR and these here new-fangeled compton machines that I am still ah learnin

well, my bill is gonna be about $2,800. All new upper & lower ball joints, tie rod ends, wheel bearings, axle seals , and u-joints. Gotta quit driving through rivers & streams ;)

I have 240,000 km on mine and they are starting to go.

I am booked in to have them replaced on Monday.

I have been through a set of U joints every 3 months or so. . anythng I can do to keepthem in check. I am thinkin ladder-bars / traction bars... . ??? I am running 33" x 12. 5" tires with 20" rims but

Every 30k i have had to install 4 ball joints and 1 u joint. 73k was last time last week. hiway only.

04. 5- just changed @ 80k. Took dealer a week to order right parts.

BJs gone at 48,000 miles

You guys are incredibly lucky. Two ball joints on my '03 3500 SRW were gone at 48,000 miles and so replaced all four. I had a u-joint go before that and replaced it -- DON'T FORGET TO MAKE 'EM BALANCE THE DRIVESHAFT!!!! Tires, etc. , were OEMs, but not now. I switched to 19. 5" Ricksons and Hankook 245 tires. Been a happy camper ever since, but I still don't have faith in the ball joints. I drive mainly on the highway and only haul 2400 lbs of water once a week. Pretty darn easy work for a truck like this.

Replace your ball joints with heavy duty. Dodge puts light duty in their heavy duty trucks (a suprise?) I like Problem Solver. Mine came from Car Quest. I am sure any first rate parts store would have heavy duty. The Dealer will charge tripple and tell you if it is Mopar it is better. My experience with Dealers is that, generally speaking, they are rip-off artists. When my windshield waser tank developed a leak, nobody had one, Dealer only. $72 for a bare cheap plastic tank. Could not have possibly cost them more than $10. When entering a dealership parts dept. travel at your own risk.

I'm not bragging here, its not my style, "97" 12v 2x4 replaced ball joints at 232,000 miles in july 2006. I purchased this truck in Dec 2001 had 113,000 on odometer.

these new bjs have grease fittings and I keep them lubed with Amsoil Synthetic Grease. I expect these to go 500,000 Syn Grease will make a difference for the little extra it cost. I will add that those original joints were not serviceable and they were well worn.
