Quick Survey to see how many miles everyone has on their '99 5 speed? Are there any particular problems or quirks (i. e. , injection pump, 5th gear nut, etc. ) I have a build date of 4/99. I've been an auto mechanic for 28 years, but know little about diesels.

Ed, mine is an auto, but I have 62K on mine now. Seems that the lift pump is the most common failure on the 99's.

Mine has 38300 and nothing mechanical to report other than steering or suspension stuff.
Be sure do drop by the DC station once in a while and check for computer upgrades. They came out with one at the end of last year, and it was a good one.

I have a '99 with a 5 speed. I have had the fifth gear replaced twice. The first time, at the mid twenty mark because it would jump out of gear after a gentle climb and into the descent as the Jake cut in. It got worse as time and miles went by. The first trip after it was "fixed" had it doing it again (125 miles since the overhaul). I tolerated it until 35. 5K and had it replaced again. No problems noticed since, but I have changed my driving habits and pull no hills in fifth (direct or over... . 2 speed aux. ) with camper and never run fifth over with 5er. . even on the flat... well... just a bit on the downhill side, but back to fourth over as soon as it levels out. Beyond that... no problems, senor. .

mine's a 2001. . but I can speak for my father who owns a 99 5 speed... before he took it off of the lot, the dealer had to replace the vp44 pump, as they said it wasn't delivering fuel pressure up to par. @ 39K miles he burned the front piston; reason for failure unknown, they did however provide him with a short block and the labor all under warranty. No transmission or clutch problems though.

Only real problem has been seals on each end of the driveshaft. Rear wheel sensor seems to be the problem now. The truck runs great.

77,000 miles so far with no major complaints. Other than a couple rear axle pinion seals that the dealer hosed up when they installed them it's been pretty painless.

99, 4x4, QC, SB, 5 spd. , trailer pkg, camper pkg. Haven't been bitten by the B. O. M. B. ing bug yet!

36xxx, i had the injection pump go out and the lift pump, both at the same time. it runs real strong, get good mpg, no problems yet. and i would say i drive it hard. off road, fast, fast off road! Great trucks!

My 98. 5 had the 5th gear nut problem around 40k miles. I admit that I used to pull some pretty good size loads up hills in 5th gear. I now drop to 4th more often and don't make it pull hills in 5th as much.

I also lost the lift pump and injection pump with about 60k miles. This was at the end of a 5k mile trip where we had put in several long hard days of driving.

These are the only major problems I've had and the engine is still running great, burns no oil, and doesn't leak with almost 80k on it.

Build date of 8/98... no problems other than steering. When it was delivered (Glenn Thomas) the truck was out of alignment. Had to take in in a few times to get the problem rectified. Pinion seal and transmission tailshaft seal replaced. Love the truck otherwise. .
34k miles on it now.
