Hey folks:

How many of the 89-93 rigs are running HX-40's? I don't know what to do with my truck next. It can hit 1000* relatively slowly without a load. My full power screw is in about 2 turns ( idles slightly higher now) and the AFC is in 3 turns. It's running pretty good, what else can I do for more fuel? It's not time for me to get a spare pump to start getting re-powered for serious power is it? Bigger parts, higher RPM's, larger lines, etc. ? I was just curious to see how many of our trucks were running HX-40's versus the WH1C (whatever our turbo is) or the HX-35.

Huh... my signature wasn't shown that time when I posted. I have Advanced Diesel Technology injectors. They are supposed to be good for about 60 more horse. I'm hitting 28 pounds of boost with these, a K&N, Full power screw in 2 turns and my AFC down 3. It doesn't run too bad.

get some exhaust... If yours is like mine there is a major kink at the transfer case. . you will see your boost go up and exhaust temp go down with a better exhaust... . Good luck . .

John,

First, check where your AFC pin is at. Factory on the 4 I have moved was about 75% of max. Moving it to max will give you an extra 2-4 psi, but cooldown time will increase slighlty. As for the HX40, it doesnt sound like you need to fork out an extra grand just yet. 1000 degrees isnt too bad, unless you are post turbo, in which case you are still in the "yellow". In my experience, peak EGT comes on at lower rpms, when lugging, and the turbo isnt spinning fast enoughto keep up with the fuel, due to the lower velocity of lower rpm (clear as mud?). So boost vs post/pre turbo T couple accuracy doesnt come in to play as much. I was under the impression the HX 40 is to flow more air when EGTs get out of hand. Try a 3. 5 or 4" exhaust, and see how it affects your EGT.

Post Script

I noticed you have a 12 cm housing. If you do a lot of towing, it will choke at higher boost pressures, causing EGTs to rise. But if you are mostly empty, it is good for quick off-the-line speed, and flows more air at lower throttle than the bigger ones, thus netting better mpgs. Just my experiences while towing 15K+ behind the truck. ANyone else who has had different results chime in.
