On the ram diesel index site i see that it takes 11 quarts but it looks as if mine might take 12. i don't have the owner's manual handy. thanks. scott.

First in the 12v the pump holds about 2qts oil and takes several hours to drain out of the pump. So let it sit for a while or many let it sit over night. Makes sure you get all the oil.

Add one 1qt to the filter and 10 in the filler tube. Then fire it up and adjust from there.

Also since the pump does hold 2 qts, and the min-max marks on the dipstick are about 2 qts. So if you just stop the engine, wait a few minutes and test you should be on the low end of the scale. After letting it sit for 2 hours you should be on the top end of the scale.

Not letting the pump drain and dumping in 11qts and/or filling to the max mark on a freshly run engine is a good way to over fill. Then oil come out the breather tube and dumps all over the front diff, stinks for about a week, etc.

I drain overnight and dump in 12 quarts. The level always looks good a few days later. I use the Delo 400 in the gallon containers. I'm not about to measure out a quart and hold it back... ... ... .

The correct amount is 11 quarts.

There was some dipsticks that were marked incorrectly and showed low w/ 11 quarts and full w/ 12 quarts. I think this only affected the 94-95 models.

Here are a few thread about oil capacity.

It looks like there are quite a few guys out there running the 12 quarts w/o problems for many miles, but Cummins and DC say 11, so knowing this I feel better using 11 vs. 12.

I put in 3 gallons but I let it drain over night. I never had the dipstick come out foamy, so I dont bother to hold back on the one quart.
