How many run with the fridge on?

I run with mine on. I like ice cream and there is no way to keep it frozen without the freezer running at all times. My camper manual says to turn the fridge off before refueling and close the valves. I do that. I also like cold beer upon arrival at my distination.

For six years I towed with the fridge on. The end of last Summer I was returning from a 3 month trip to Alaska and it just felt like Southern Alberta, Montana and Southwest Colorado were burning to the ground. Last years fires in the West made me look at the way I camped and hiked. From there I decided that if I had an accident and started a fire when turning the gas off at the bottles might have prevented it, it would be hard to live with.

Slybones, you're right about the ferrys. they make you turn the gas off at the tank valve.



RAMalama, sorry you had to put up with that crap from the locals. Then they wonder why everyone gives them a bad time I go thru tunnels all the time while towing and also go across the Golden Gate bridge. Have never been stopped nor heard of this rule. Any one else out here know anything about this? Knowing the way they think about things, it wouldn't surprise me if it is true. Could also just be a local putting a little pressure on someone from out of the area.

I know here in the tri-state area (NJ-NY) there are big red signs at all tunnels forbidding campers with bottled gas. doesn't matter if there on or off you can't enter a tunnel, you must use a bridge.

I drove over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge last year with my 5er ($17!!). They asked at the gate if the propane was off, but didn't forbid me from crossing just because I was carrying propane. This is a bridge/tunnel (two tunnels).



My fridge will get pretty cool, and if I get it cold before I leave, and turn the gas off before driving, it will keep things from going bad (milk, cheese etc). However, it take too dang long for it to get the beverages cold enough again. And it won't keep anything frozen if gas is off while driving. I am in the military, and shop at the commissary. I get meat cheep, and so I buy it all before I leave. It has to keep frozen.

I've been running with it on but think I will stop. Think the inverter route is safer. Might be just that I am hyper sensitive to being extra safe with a young child and all. That deal with the Caldecott tunnel is due to a major tragedy about 10 or so years ago in which a major pileup involving a tanker truck that caught fire killed a whole lot of people. One of the ugliest things I've ever seen on the news.

I admit to leaving mine on, and I know I shouldn't. I tow the biggest 5th wheel Prowler makes, a 2001 34. 5L. I've looked at it, and the LPG lines under it are reasonably well protected. Our previous 5th wheel had a gas line running very close to the back of the left rear wheel of the trailer. We blew out the right rear tire once, and the debris tore up the trailer behind the wheel. It would have shreaded that gas line if the tire had blown on the other side. I had the frig on, and I think it would have burned the camper up. That's something to inspect on campers - where is the gas line running down there in relation to the tires. A little thing like a blown tire can turn bad fast if an LPG line gets broken.

I run with ours on while moving with propane. Even in strong winds across Nevada's deserts it stays on with no problem. This Buds for you. GC

I run a 12 volt system and I run it on ALL the time. My refer is a Norcold and my batteries are (two) 6 volt, deep cycle golf cart battries hooked up which become 12 volts. This system has yet to leave me stranded without power. My old single 12 volt deep cycle failed me to many times. Sam's club sells these battries for around $50. 00 each. I have let my refer run for three days without charging the battries.
