Camper...
I put a 3k set in 2 weeks ago.
I went in through the TOP while I had my plate removed. Although I have never gone in through the side port, I was glad I went in through the top because I could "see" what I was doing very well. Having been there, I'd feel just as comfortable using the side port.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it looked as though the side port gives you less of a chance of dropping anything into the pump because the spring tube maatches up directly with the port hole and helps keep stuff from getting around adn into the pump. I dropped a retaining nut in the pump oil galley and scared the shiiii out of me. I quickly fished it out with my telescoping pencil magnet, took 4 valum and proceded with the "operation".
It was like playing Operation as a grown up.
Regardless of the number of springs that are in there stock, you only reuse the outer, largest spring. Remove all inner springs, shims, and foot plate from each side. Once you have everything out except the outermost spring, install the new foot plate (round pyrmid shaped button) and a new set (2) of springs. The only thing you'll reuse it the largest outer spring.
Larry B had a good way of measuring the correct "distance" to reinstall the retaining nuts. Simply count the number of turns in degrees until the top of the nut is flush with the top of the bolt, write it down, remove the nut all the way. Switch out the springs, reinstall the nut till flush with the top of the nut, then finish it to the number of turns that it took to make it flush.
Good Luck ! Your're gunna love it.
PS my truck is in the shop as we speak getting my new DTT installed..... didn't know time could go so slow... . a second is a helllll of a long time!
