the thicker head gasket retarted my timing. I was going to set my timing advance but am unshure of how much. my local shop back in WV said to kick it up about 10* for a total of 24* I have not read any ones sig that said over 18* so what do you guys think? the local shop is verry preformance minded and some times looses sight of the daily driver reliability. I was thinking 16* and recut to a 100 plate.

loosing fuel on top

future 3K springs with hd valve springs

also delivery valves but not shure the # there $125 hand cut? I will ask more questions about the dv's next call up there.

thank you in advance!

I had my 95 5 spd checked and set by an ex cummins mechanic located in Ogedn Ut. He did not want to set mine past 15 deg when I said I was using it for trailer towing. I suspect highly advanced timing, when accompanied by heavy loads, at lower RPM, is a no-no.

Now, if you run at high RPM all the time, advanced timing may b e the way to go.

Whoever told you at that local shop in WV to go to 24* needs to be shot. That is some insane timing and should never be set that high with a daily driver. Like the others said, 15-16* is good for daily driver. You could even get away with 17*, but I wouldn't go much higher. :)

not unless...

They all the time say not to go over 16 deg of timing without o-ringing the head. I am running around 27* of timing and drive mine every day. But I have my head o-ringed. But that mutch of timing makes it heack in the cold weather. I would not go over 16* of timing or call schides or some one like that who would know without a question. Justin

thanks for the reply's I think I will set it at 16* to start and go from there I have my own timing tools so I can play with it thanks again by the way the local shop's pull truck was the example it runs a dual timing pump or somthing low rmp 25* high rpm 36* some self advancing racing pump it's verry radical like I said they don't have the daily driver mind set like most TDR members this site is great.

Well, that explains it. Sounds like they do know what they are doing then... . ok, so don't shoot them just tell them to put daily drivers into thought when giving timing advice. :-laf Sounds like a pretty interesting truck they have there. :)

the local shop does not have a lot of time to work on there truck they build a lot of others and that pays but takes time and leads to what I am about to describe. I will never do it justice but here goes the pull truck is a first gen 4 door dualy long bed with about 4" lift and 33's I think. it has a 12-valve p pump short stack out the hood w/rain cap 47rh 305 transfer and a cap on the back that doesent match the color is tan/brown two tone with rust here and there. white wheels (rusty) basicly it dosent look like much. the sticker top of windsheild says; the big the bad and the ugly. and it is. not really shure whats done to the engine it also looks like it will not run but the head is 0-ringed, the pump is radical, allen head head bolts hold the head on, tony at dunrite built a custom converter for it, and when they ran the twins it would push 100lbs boost and turn 5500-5600rpm "a real hand full" I have seen this truck pull with a single charger and it did real good. he switched to a single because every body in the area complained (they dident have twins) now he runs NOS but I have not seen that yet. when the truck idles it rolls and hunts heavy with a puff of blue smoke every 1 second when you drive it to the scale or track you do not touch the fuel its really meanand like to take off hard. if your ever in west virgina you should come and see a show you will be glad you did.
