Pump wire guage?

Hi All,

Can anyone, who has replaced their OEM muffler with an aftermarket unit, tell me how much it lowered their EGTs?

I am most curious about those folks who retained the OEM 3" exhaust system.

Am curious how much. if any, improvement was achieved.

What muffler did you use? In-Cab Noise-Lower or higher?

Thanks, in advance, for your comments,

Frank Dz

I dropped the muffler and put in a chunk of open 3" pipe, no restrictions anywhere of any sort in a stock 3" system. It dropped my EGT by NOTHING and decreased my spool time by NOTHING. I gained noise and that is all. Unless significantly over 300 hp AND fighting higher EGT leave it the heck alone!!!!!!

I went to straight exhaust with the 3". My results were a little different than LSMITH's.

1. EGT did not change.

2. Spool time did not change.

3. Did not gain noise, but dam that exhaust sounds great when you hammer it. Kinda goes with the smoke.

I have no reason to believe there is any change other than sound. My son has a '98 12 valve, and he does not like the sound of my straight exhaust.

Well, heck! I will throw in here.

I removed my stock muffler, left the resonator on, and used a 4"piece from it to the stock tail pipe.

Egt might have dropped about 50-75 degrees.

Only noticed shortened spool time for about the first 10 minutes I drove the truck after removing muffler.

And, it sounds much better now that it did when it had that extra weight hanging off the pipe.

Would I do it again? Hell ya!

Just by the sound of it I musta gained 200HP! LOL

It depends on how you use your truck. If i'm just putting around town or on the highway, there was no significant change. When it came to towing, especially over high mountain passes, I gained about 5mph on the 1350egt limit set using my PowerMax. You get a mild drone at about 2000rpm that only gets annoying when on long trips.

Agree, I left the resonator as well, but removed the muffler. Maybe at best lowered EGT by 25*, but it wasnt much if even that. Same w/ spoolup, not significantly better.

The sound is alot better though. Its not annoyingly loud, but has a great tone. Yes still has a slight drone at 2000 with the resonator, but makes it worth it. Want to go to a 4 or 5" system to get less egt, but dont want to tamper with the sound.

In my opinion, the resonator definately takes the harshness out of the exhaust note at WOT. My buddies all have full straight pipes and they sound great, just a little too loud for me when my wife is with me on long trips.

Like everyone else, I had stock, removed the muffler and left resonator in place. Didn't notice any performance difference, but it sounded good. In cab noise increase was insignificant. I could only tell a increase in exhaust loudness with the passenger window down riding next to a concrete barrier or through a underpass. I've since yanked off all 3" pipe and installed a straight pipe 5". Now, there is a significant increase in exterior sound. It sounds just like a big-rig semi. Not a huge increase inside though.

I used the NAPA 3 1/2" straight through muffler....

and left the resonator on. I dropped 25-50 deg and the noise is a "lower/fuller" tone... not really louder.

A LITTLE OFF THE QUESTION

As the subject title says,,

Just for info purpose I put the 5" EXHAUST on (straight pipe)

A LOT of decrese in EGT,, 150-200,,,That is ,,Not towing any thing.

I to droped the oem muffler and replaced it with a pipe (genos muffler elimination ki), and I didn't notice any egt drop, or change in spool-up time, just got alittle louder and you can hear the turbo wine alittle more.

I dropped the muffler this weekend and no diffence in EGT or turbo spool. But God do I love the sound, quiet in the cab no drone, and now people are doing a double take when I drive by.

My egt's didn't drop much either. Maybe 25-50* or so. It wasn't long and I added a Scotty II, with a 100* drop in egt's.

I've had my muffler out for about a year and a half now, and I still get double-takes when I drive it around.

And I still enjoy it. I did leave the resonator in though. Someday, like after she's paid off, the truck will get a 5". I have a friend that has one, and wow does that thing sound great!
