Today's weather, right after this...

I had a house moved from the local Air Force base to my farm about 4 years ago. The weight of the house, without any siding, was about 30 tons. The house is 1521 square feet.

Hope this helps.

LSmith is correct about how fast a pannel house goes up. It took five guys five days to errect my parrents place. All that was left after that was to put on the roofing, windows and siding... . then finish the inside. .

PW - I don't know what the structure is like for your present house, so I don't know if you're able do do what I did.

My house is a work in progress, or should I say - was.

We started with a three bedroom ranch, that cost up $28k. As the family grew, we had a partial upper floor roughed in and I finished it over a year's time. Then Mrs Doc and I built a garage. Over several more years, as we could afford it, we improved the driveway, replaced all the windows and hired a guy to put on vinyl siding, which I could have done myself. Even before the siding went on, people who didn't know the place thought it was a newer house. Now the place is one of the nicest homes in the neighborhood, nicer than a few of the brand new ones that they've been building.

Our place is worth about $190 now, even if it does sit in the swamp.

Not long ago, we thought we wanted to move into another house. We wanted more property. We decided not to move and I'm happy about that. After all, we spent half our lives getting this place to where we like it.

I'd like to buy the three lots next to me, which are too wet for a house. I'm waiting for them to go up for tax sale. When I get them, I'll build a pole barn over there and life will be complete.

I'm still thinking of adding an attached garage with family room, but now that the kids are moving on, it isn't a big issue. If I fall into some cash I might do it.

A good analysis of it's cost per square foot would be helpful, if you want to give that out :)

Unfortunately, my lot is 240 feet long. And just under 50 wide. Since it's non-conforming, whether the city would let me do much of anything to it is very much in question. Besides, it's sloping quite a bit. If I can get permits to work on it, I don't think they will allow much more than remodelling of what's here, not expansion.

I could probably buy the lot next to me, which is a corner lot, about three times as wide and nearly square. It has a house on it, but the house is worth what mine is... mostly nada.

We've talked to the owner several times, but he never seems to make up his mind as to whether he wants to sell or not. Nobody has lived in it for years, and he just sorta keeps letting it sit there. I'd tear the house down and build a new one, making this lot I'm on into a garage / yard / garden combo.

Why do I keep it? I have 24 payments left on it.

The owner made me a deal... I could rent it for the going rate or for a little more, I could own it in 4 years. Over 4 years, I will pay about 15,000 more than rent was for this house. I figure that's not too bad of a deal.

It all depends on how quickly it can move things onto a scale, record the weight, move the stuff of the scale and move to the next item.

Off-hand, if it is a strong house in good shape, it probably can weigh quite a bit. If it's run-down, in poor physical condition, it likely can't weigh much at all.

(Now that I think about it, there's probably some truth to this. )

Oh, and :) :) :) for the levity-challenged.

I have some photos of a house in Belen NM that is being cut apart into sections and moved on a dove-tail goose-neck trailer hooked to the back of an older dually droF with the right-rear fender missing.

But - for some reason, I'm being told I can't post attachments.

Back in the late sixties before zoning and building laws became stricter, someone I knew built a dome. He put a 2x4 frame together, stretched burlap or something over it and had it sprayed with foam. Then he went over the outside with an elastomeric paint of somekind.

I don't remember all the details or if it leaked. It was pretty neat inside though and he had it sited on the side of a hill. Looked like ET had landed it there.
