I'm running a VA plus 275's plus the edge (usually off). My VA is the newer unit, replaced by BD when my original started failing. The other recent change is 4" Jardine plumbing. I'm finding the truck smokes so bad at low boost that I've taken the VA off. The edge hardly smokes at all unless combined with the VA. I can control the smoke by being extremely careful with the throttle at low boost, but this is not my normal driving style, so I often leave big black clouds at stop signs or when passing. Is this normal with the newer VA's? I still think I have a sensor problem, but it would be good to find out just how much smoke others are experiencing with their VA's. Perhaps this one has gone south, too, except it performs really well above 10psi boost.

A VA combined with injectors (and a box) will smoke at low boost. No if ands or buts about it.

Thats one of the reasons many people "prefer" the EZ or DDTM or even the COMP box, it provides adjustability for smoke control.

Pretty Badly

Couldn't resist ... . Before the Injectors not hardly much at all and that was with the bank's, Now Thick black NO. NO Puff .

When I just had the VA with the boost mod. I would get a fair amount of smoke. Then I added the 275's and not much more. Then I had the Jardine exaust installed and I have almost no smoke. I did install a K&N at the same time.

I'm very pleased with this set up.

I have the VA and 275 injectors. I can't get mine to smoke no matter what I do. I have the older version so maybe that makes a difference?

VA fuels right off the bat

The VA shouldn't smoke much with mild injectors. But since it starts fueling right off idle, when combined with another box, it amplifies or combines the amount of fueling of both boxes and will of course get smoky. I have not experimented with doubling up boxes but I think the VA is not the best choice for this, since most others wait until a higher RPM or boost level to start increasing fuel significantly.

Running boxes solo, I think the VA is one of the better boxes out there.

I'm running the VA (older version) and 275s and mine will smoke with low boost. I've noticed that it will smoke under light throttle such as accelerating after slowing down on freeway. I'm going to replace the IAT sensor and see if this will help. I would like to know what yall think. If this doesn't help I'm thinking of going to the EZ. Any suggestions?????

275's and an original VA mine will smoke during heavy foot/ low boost conditions. It is not a heavy thick smoke, but it does smoke. I don't mind mine as IF I want to, I can run it up easy through the gears with none at all. BUT, if I want to, I can add a little smoke to remind the guys behind me I ain't stock.

:p

SteveG, The IAT didn't make as much difference with the smoke as I thought it would. I changed the lift pump and now I get MORE smoke. But my mpg is over 22. One thing that's nice about it right now is that with the summer heat, I can blow smoke rings in 6th gear after slowing down and then accelerating in traffic  . Only does it before the boost comes up.

heat/humidity

I didn't notice much smoke with just VA and boost module when it was cool, but there is considerably more when the outside air temps are 85+ and humidity is up. I can see the difference from early morning on the way to work, and the trip home mid-afternoon. Easy to drive gently and avoid smoke, but also possible to let kids and BMW's know they've just been passed by a DIESEL. I don't mind the amount of smoke I'm getting at all. Ray

V.A. SMOKE

:D SMOKE IT IF YOU GOT IT, MINE SMOKE'S REAL BAD WHEN TAKEING OFF . AND WHEN PULLING A LOAD, I RUN WITH THE V. A & 275 INJECTORS. PUT THE PEDEL TO THE FLOOR AND SMOKE THEM MORE!!! :D :D :D :D

My VA smokes from idle until the turbo is properly spooled up around 1200 rpm when floored. From there on out, no smoke. Doesn't the EZ do the same thing? My injectors are still stock. The smoke doesnt bother me except for the soot on the bedsides above the exhaust pipe.

Increase elevations = increased smoke!

With the "99" auto I ran an older style VA. At sea level (there abouts) I would get no addtional smoke. Get up in the upper elevations of the Rocky's, and when I would take off (low boost) some smoke.

The "01" has the PE EZ. On the default setting I could pass for a smoke screen regardless of what kind of load I was putting on the engine. In setting 2, I can make it smoke when I want to, but tolerable. In the upper elevations, she smokes regardless of load applied, looks like it did in the default setting. This of course is at low boost.

Add fuel, or lug the engine down, more smoke!

A friend of mine had the 275s and the older version of the VA. He did not smoke hardly at all. I had followed him once in awhile, and never saw smoke.

I saw a VA on DD2 injectors and it smoked a lot! Although, smoke is not always a bad thing... .

No it does not. Thats some of the "advantages" of the EZ over the VA. The EZ has a built in boost module, to allow you to run higher then stock boost, where as a VA has to have one seperatly. Also on the EZ there are three levels of "smoke" control, basically it dteremines at what boost level the fuel is added, the VA is not adjustable. The other advantage is it plugs into a different location then the VA and on the new trucks there is a yellow void sticker on the connector to the injection pump (where the VA plugs in). These are the major difference in a EZ vs VA. They both provide roughly 40 peak hp tho.
