I had my valve seet on my 03. 5 drop and cause the valve to put a hole in the top of my #2 piston. How much should it cost to fix? vesus buying a new engine from cummins? ATS is quoting me about $7500 to fix everything and to take preventive measures by putting in oversized valves, o-ringing the head and porting it. And for about $500 more to do an aftermarket cam. As far as fixng it goes they are going to: machine block sleeve #2 cylinder, check all others for good cross hatches, boil block, deck head and block for true surface, hone and clean up cylinders 1,3,4,5,6, and cummins rebuild kit.

(Some of this is a foriegn to me, I just wrote what is written on my estimate)

Any thoughts or advice on my situation??????

If a new one's $5900 I'd lean toward a "better than stock" bombed rebuild myself. Assuming machining and sleeving #2 is as good & reliable as "new. "

For sure I would be checking ebay and www.car-parts.com for a new or used one. I see used ones on car-parts.com for like 3000-5000, And I see alot of blocks too.

this guys got two short blocks: (short block=blockand crank, pistons)

If that $7500 is inclusive, I'd jump on it.

Why go through all the hassle of buying through ebay, maybe getting a motor for $5k-$6k, and finding someone to do the swap.

I'd rather have a motor with a cam that's ready for twins for less than $2k more.

Ported head, o-ringed with a cam... I'd sure like to have that done to mine.

I Had the same thing happen on #5 but not that much damage, the 305/555 heads are not as good as newer 325/600 the valve seates in the 305 are prone to fall out if you run EGT's to high. If you chose to to reuse your old head make sure they center punch the valve seats so they can't come out.
