The dealer wants over $400. Says it isn't covered under the 5 year 100,000 mile waranty. Just doesn't sound right. Does anyone know of someplace cheaper that will ship it next day air?

I believe the $400. price 00 got from Dodge was close to what I heard from a local Dodge dealer as well.

Cummins NW had them for $130. if memory serves.

Go to another dealer, it is covered by warranty. I had mine replaced at 67k miles about 2 months ago. Paperwork says covered under " CUMMINS DIESEL EMISSIONS - FEDERAL" and LOP failure codes SE W1 08 43 53, also an LOP # 14500302. Didn't cost me a dime, see my signature for mods. Hope this helps.

P. S. The dealer only gets . 5 hour for this job, maybe that's why they don't want to do it.

The dealer down in bishop was the one saying it's not covered under waranty. Guess I'll send the guy up to carson dodge. They are pretty good with waranty work. Thanks for the info.

..... I don't know Tom, I saw Evan Beck change one in 15 minutes.

John, Evan is a fast guy, all those warranty times are for half fast mechanics. #ad

I ran into the guy who had the lift pump problem yesterday and boy did he have a story to tell. He went up to carson dodge and they tested the pump and it was bad. They ordered one up and he went back a couple days latter to have it installed. A week later the truck died while driving down the road. It was towed to a local dealership where he lives and they discoverd that the lift pump was the original one. It hadn't been changed because it tested good when he took the truck in to have it replaced. Now not only was the lift pump dead but the injector pump was completely fried to. The dealer replaced both and the truck ran great. For a little while. When I saw him there was diesel sprayed all over the engine copartment from a broken injector line. Three of the holdowns were missing so the #5 line bounced up and down till it split. The #1 and #3 lines were touching and about to rub through. I patched things up as best I could and he's heading to carson dodge for some new hard lines. Hope that will be the end to this story.

Boy,I feel bad for that guy. Great quality control of their techs, huh?
I should go to a dealer and demand I get a job as a diesel tech... at least I know I can fix the dang things right! #ad

Too bad the service from DC is absolute crap. At least for the vast majority of the dealers. I had my truck at Manual Dodge dealer in Dallas, TX because my truck would not start. I spoke to the service manager and suggested it my be the transfer pump (lift pump) and he jumped my A$$ for finding all the so called BS info from the internet.

Anyway, It took these bozos 3 days to finally diagnose the problem and to replace the lift pump.

DC dealership does not get much money for any warranty work and therefore there is not much incentive for them to perform warranty work.

I would NOT recommend Manual Dodge in Dallas, TX. The service manager is a real prick.

Too bad the service after the sale sucks so badly.

My 2 cents. .

Its not just Dodge screwing us fellas, I've got a Towmcar I took in for a bad windshield wiper motor and bad in-tank fuel pump. Cost was going to be $800. Went to the local parts house and got both parts for $100 total and changed them both in 2hrs flat. If I had done either one before, I could have knocked at least 1/2hour off that. That equals a labor rate of over $450/hr Go figure how that one works out with their posted $60/hr rate. The dealers don't charge how long it actually takes, just however much "time" the "book" says it should take. I think the "book" said a total of ten hours hence $600 labor and $200 in parts. Bunch of BULLS**T if you ask me.

I was just at the cummins dealer the other day for some banjo bolts, and some additives and odds and ends and thought I'd inquire about the lift pump because of the problems I'd heard the 98. 5's had. They told me that the pump for that year had in fact been superceded but couldn't give me any specs. The price was $136 for the my year (98. 5) but they need the engine # to be sure.

My 1998 1/2 has about 30 k on it. Would it be a good idea to just go ahead and replace the lift pump with a new one before it goes out and frys the inj pump also. .

Thanks

Ken

It would ge a good idea to have the fuel pressure tested. Installing a gauge is even better. Also when you turn the key on be sure to listen for the pump. It should run for a couple seconds. Quick way to tell if it's dead.

Same problem with Dodge parts counter. Tried to get a spare lift pump for a trip. Dodge said it was a "contact star hotline" part and they couldn't sell it over the counter. If they could, it would cost me $395. 00. Found the pump (5th upgrade)at Cummins West for $139. 00. Dodge couldn't care less. Cummins was great.
