Real problem is that none of us knows where the fuel pick-up is in the tank. You could very well run out of fuel with 5 gallons still left in the tank. And 5 gallons laying on the bottom of that tank would only be a couple of inches high. Wish there was a drain plug on the bottom so I could get rid of the gunk that must accumulate in the tank. Me - As soon as i get dinged - I'm heades for gas.

MikeR... shame on you! That is a funny story... did ya chew out yur wife, and did ya tell her how low on fuel YOU were!?

Tlippy... although we may not know where the pickup tube is, if these guys are running to 34 gallons, it must be in the right spot. I have run past the "ding", but have never put in more than 28. 5 gallons.

How can being low on fuel have anything to do with the fuel pump getting heat saturated????? The pump doesn't know if you are low on fuel and will run quite reliably with not overheating at all with a full tank or a low tank. Quantity has nothing to do with the cooling or the lubericity of the pump.

Sheepdip, the fuller the tank is the more of a heat sink for the returning fuel. Say if you are adding 100° fuel continuously to 30 gallons it will dissipate the heat more than if you were adding the hot fuel to 3 gallons. I wouldn't think that it would be a big deal unless you are operating in high outside temperatures.

Hey Rob,
She rode with me to look for a station with gas cans and diesel fuel, and she was the one who pointed out how low my gauge was.

As you know, right now my truck is sitting immobile in the car port... but it has a full tank of fuel. Go figure!
