I currently have a stock 2002, CTD, 4wd, HO with a 6 spd. I am considering going with EMD 1. 5 injectors and an Edge EZ(or something equivalent). Is this too much power for a stock clutch? If so, what are my options without having to upgrade the clutch (for now).

If the stock clutch won't hold that much. Which is a better upgrade? The injectors, or the box?

I currently have an AFE stage two filter set up, will be upgrading my exhaust, and know that I need to add guages.

Also how much strain/stress will this put on the stock fuel system? Will an upgrade be required there as well?

thanks

Maybe. My stock clutch slipped with the EZ and DD2s (roughly equivalent to the 1. 5's in terms of BHP/torque). Justin Hohn's didn't with the same setup. I guess that says that this combo is right on the borderline for the stock clutch.

The EZ by itself should be safe - I never slipped my stock clutch even towing at 21,180 lbs GCW. Running the EZ, drop down a size or two from the Mach 1. 5 injectors and you'll probably be OK. With the EZ and the 1. 5s, in the words of Dirty Harry, "Are ya feeling lucky today?"

The HO seems to respond better to injectors than boxes. With the SO, the opposite is true.

I'm still on my original lift pump using Ray's banjo bolts. I have 16+ PSIG at idle, 14-15 PSIG at cruise and 11-12 PSIG at WOT towing our 5th wheel (see signature). These pressures are fine for the VP-44.

how much

I have seen a set of 275's and a EZ slip clutch in less than 10 mins. Every truck is a little differant and the injection pump puts out as much a 40HP varaiance. When my truck was totaly stock I was putting out 244. 1 :--) at the back wheels. Some injection pumps are hotter than others from the factory.

I would install both, if the clutch slips, disconnect the diagnostic plug from the engine and leave the map sensor plug hooked up so it boost fools. Then let her eat until you can afford a clutch.

Clutch

One thing that will help the stocker live is keep your RPM's up. Lugging it in higher gear and mashing the go pedal will help it slip

Marek,

Mine slips down low with just the box! CON OFE goin in monday. My next upgrade will probably be EDM 1. 5's too!

I don't think it'll hold long if it even holds at all. my . 02$

Happy bombing.

Been running around with stock clutch, Comp, and Mach2s for a few months now. I wonder if the Mach4s coming next week will finally do the trick :-laf

Thanks for all of the input. Are there other boxes out there that are a little less agressive than the Edge. I am looking for something that will provide the boost fooling, but won't slip the clutch.

thanks

what box?

The comp will do that when it's off and you can adjust from in the cab. When you have a big enough injectors the box stays off most of the time. :-laf

See my signature. I tend to think it is the way you drive that determines how good the clutch is. I have 136,000+ turns now with the comp being on since around 50,000 I think. Before that it was with a strait Edge. I still have my original clutch which show no signs of giving up even when I am loaded up to 23,000 lbs + when I tow.

Driving style is your key ;)

Don't know about '02, but from a '98

:-laf :D :-laf :D :-laf :D :p :p

SMOKED the stock clutch on a stock engine at 72,000 miles

Driving Technique Matters Too

I have 495 HP on my 02 w/ stock clutch and 57K on it. Still haven't slipped it yet. A lot has to do w/ revving it out between 2500 and 3000 RPM when getting into it before shifting. On my '00, I pretty much had the clutch smoked getting on it low RPM and doing 3 gear launches. I've only done 3 or 4 on my 02.

I have a South Bend Con O FE ready to install just in case I ever burn the stock one up.

Now that I've bragged, watch it go out tomorrow.

You can get more out of it if you rev it out, especially towing.

What other recommendations do you have for "boxes". I've noticed that there are quite a few and everyone seems to have their preference. Any additional input would be great.

I know that a lot of people on here aren't too fond of Banks, but they now have the Big Hoss Diesel Tuner for the 02 and it's roughly the same cost as an EDGE. It has the built in defueling when the EGT's go too high. Has anyone tried this box?

What other options are out there.

thanks

everybody has there preferance, but give this a thought. i have an 2001 auto with 4 inch exhaust,k&n fipk kit and gauges and a mag hytek transmission pan. i have the blue chip adjustable box,o to 135 horsepower. if it starts to slip turn back the dial just a tad..... by the way i dont hear much about bluechip on hear but 135 horse for 495$ is cheaper than a edge comp. not to mention debbie at scheides has a blue chip in her personal truck... ... just a thought Oo.

Marek, I have a Big Hoss tuner, the one that taps the pump wire and I'm really happy with the performance. I'm running it on the highest level- 5 and it makes a huge difference. On level- 4 I dynoed 246HP and 682TQ. The HP was really low but the TQ is right in spec. I know someone will bash my numbers but my truck will kill a Crown Victoria V-8 police pack on the highway and I don't even have to downshift! I don't know anything about the other model that doesn't tap the wire. I like my Banks

The stock clutch should stand some mild power upgrades with no problems. Just keep in mind that it is the weak link in your drive train and drive accordingly, they do not like to be abused. If you let them slip, they will not last long. If they won't stand mild power increases, it is because they are already junk. Drag racing, sled pulls, starting a load in too high of a gear and even full power upshifts will cause slipping and shorten clutch life. A small box and small injectors should be fine.
