Welcome to Colorado, where the fuel prices are some kind of derivative of the wind speed and recent lotto numbers. Today alone I have seen it as low as $1. 51 and as high as $1. 69.

Have a good trip and be safe - as of this instant we are expecting snow for the weekend. But then, I think the weather report may be one thing that changes faster than fuel prices... .

Jim

It depends on what area you are in. The rural areas like Trinidad are around 1. 79, and are generally higher than the metro areas. In Denver I have seen a range from 1. 55 to 1. 73 today. Have a safe drive.

Cool thanks for the fast replys. So from what it looks like its not as bad as my roomate was telling me, he was saying up over 2 bucks so I think I can live with 1. 50-1. 70. Thanks again, I take off saterday night hopfully around 10 or around there, looks like its going to be about a 14-16 hours drive to Frisco. Ill be looking for those TDR badges out there.

Justin:

Just last week I drove from Denver to Cortez (down by Durango). In Castle Rock where I live I just filled up for 1. 55. From there to the southwest corner of the state I saw prices ranging from 1. 59 to 1. 86. If you can I would fill up somewhere in the greater metro Denver area then you should be able to get up to Summitt County and have enough fuel to play up there and get back to Denver before you need to refill again. Fuel is generally higher up in the hills. If you are going to Vail go there with plenty of fuel they tend to be one of the more expensive places to get fuel.

FWIW

Justin - this isn't on your route, but for you local guys, the best prices I consistently see are on I-25, exit 240 (Longmont). The Shell and Conoco there usually run neck-and-neck. Again today they are at $1. 51.

Only cheaper stop I know of is to hit the Wyo border and fill up in Cheyenne.

Barry, saw that you were in Cortez. Thats were my dads family is from. Havent been over there in a few years, hows thing look, the same?

It always irked me about fuel prices in Colorado. Weld County is the largest agricultural county in the US and yet their Diesel prices are almost always the highest in Greeley, the heart of Weld County. Seems like they would give the farmers a little relief, red dye is expensive up there too.

Once again thanks guys, looks like Im going to be allright. I think we are taking I-25 up to Denever then hanging a left to head out to Copper Mountain. Barry I think Vail is pretty close to Copper so I will be sure to fill up in Denver before we head west. Thanks for the tips guys

Justin,

Once you head west from Denver on I-70, there is a truck stop at exit 266 (Ward Rd), called Travel Centers Of America. Their website currently shows diesel at $1. 63. There's another station or two at that exit you could chose from.

From there to Copper runs about 70 miles each way so you should easily make that round trip without having to get soaked at one of the fine mountain resort towns.

Have fun - Copper is my favorite.

You can avoid most of Denver (including TREX) by taking C-470 on the south end of town west to Golden, but this also bypasses most of the truck stops.

For fuel along I-25, there is a good truck stop in Walsenberg, which is about 40 miles south of Pueblo.

Vail is about 20 miles from Copper Mouintain. Avoid the fuel stop at the Copper exit, it is one of the most expensive in the state! They really wring the folks leaving the ski area heading back to DVR. I would avoid Vail as they can be pricey too. I get my fuel in Silverthorne. About 3/4 mile north of I-70 on the left hand side at 3rd ave (if you go- look for the older building w/ large white canopy. ) They do a lot of business here for the locals so the diesel is not stale and it is the best of the area's prices.

EDIT: Are ya' goinna' do some skiing while you're here?

Yep we plan on skiing Mon thru Thus at Copper then go back to Texas on Friday. Im going to be one tired fool come next weekend. I found out we are staying at Buffalo Ridge Condominiums in Silverthorne so it looks like I can fill up there when we are up there. Im not sure what we are going to do in Denver if we go around or thru, I want to go threw and stop at the main REI store. I looked on the net and it seams to be a couple exits before I hit I-70 so that might work out pretty well. Just looked at the weather and looks like chance of snow all week and high wind on the ridges. Well guys once again thanks for the help, I got my TDR Travel Companion so if anything does go worng(nock on wood) hopfully I can find someone. Justin<><

The REI store is awsome. The building is about 100 years old, and was built as the power plant for the trolly that ran in Denver in the early 1900's. It was a rail road museum for quite a while before REI bought it.
