My engine uses about a half-pint every 4,000 miles. I change at 4500, use Mobil Delvac 1300, good service. Patrick.

0-1qt added in between changes (3-5k miles). Normally none, even at almost 180k. :D Usually if I do have to add a quart, it is time to change the oil anyways. Pretty rare.

Can't say that about the Ford though. :( 1qt. /500-1000 miles. It used to be more, but I got all the external leaks fixed.

I have not had mine very long, but I changed the oil when I first got it, and it is now about 3 thousand and the oil is at the same level. The valve cover gaskets leak a little too so that means that the engine is not really burning much at all. Make sure the engine has been sitting or just shut off when you do your measurments every time (keep them the same) as this cummins seems to keep over a quart up above, and can askew results. If yours is high, check for leaks, and make sure it is not the turbo.

Our diesel farm tractors always used a quart of oil per day when pulling heavy even when brand new. We had a IH 1566 (180 H. P. ) that was in desperate need of an overhaul was using 5 quarts a day!

I'll add in an extra pointer: do not add oil until the level is at the add mark, as many engines will keep burning it until it is where it wants it, so if that point is half way, if will keep burning it until it gets there. So do not keep topping it off or it can be burning a lot more oil than if you just leave it alone. Just wait until it gets to the add.
