I changed the oil today for the first time ever on my cummings and the guy at the parts store said it held 10 quarts but the dip stick said it was about a quart low, does it hold more? my powerstroke held 14 and another thing,is it normal to smell something like oil burnning in the cab, it smell like i spilled some on the intake and it is buring off but i washed the motor right after i changed the oil, any ideas??

My manual says it takes 11, including the filter. The smell can come from the crankcase breather . If there is no oil present then its probably the crankcase, in which it should go away after some miles. If you do a search, you'll find a lot of info on the crankcase smell.

Hoss,
The oil pan takes 10 qts + 1 qt in the oil filter for a total of 11 qts. Far as the oil smell, you still might have had some left on the manifold/exhaust area and it just needs to burn off. I think there was also a TSB about smelling oil within the cab as well.

On my Y2K 3500 QC the book says 10 qts in oil pan and 1qt in the filter, total of 11 qts. But when I put 10 qts in the oil pan and fill the filter before installing it and add the rest of the oil to the pan the dip stick is about 1qt over full so I just put in 10 qts on the next change. It is at the full mark. Do I need to put in the extra qt?

I have a 1999 and at 10 qts i'm at full also. I have been just going with the 10 qts for 35,000 miles with no problem. If this is wrong let us know.

There has been a lot of discussion about dipstick accuracy. The general concensus has been that they are not very accurate at all. Put 11 quarts of oil in the engine when you drain and change the filter every time. My 99 reads full with 11 quarts, if it didn't I would put 11 in it and mark the dipstick where it read for future reference. It needs 11 quarts, put 11 in it.

The smell on mines comes and goes, i have been told that its the oil "puke" tube an its normal, so i guess i will just get used to it.

11 qts, changed every 10K for me, which comes about every 3 months.

Just a side note about oil capacities...

The reason the 24V trucks hold 1 less quart than the 12V is because the P7100 injection pump had oil running through it, about a quart's worth. The VP44 (unfortunately) does not use engine oil as lubrication. PSD's take a lot of oil because of the HEUI injection system. The oil galleries and high-pressure pump hold quite a bit of oil.

Conventional 15W-40 oil is good under normal driving conditions for about 6-7 thousand miles. 3k mile oil changes are really not nessecary unless you are towing all the time, everyday, in stop and go traffic. Save some $$ on oil and Filters and go AT LEAST 5k miles. You wont hurt anything, Dodge's recomended change interval is 7k, so dont worry about the warranty.

Hoss,I found out the dealerships use additave with their mopar oil,I tried some of these local oil changers and they don't, but I finally got smart and got myself a spring loaded drain plug from geno's it is great no tools needed,I also switched oil to chevron dello 15/40 it is really a good high grade oil and it comes in 1 gallon jugs pretty cool!! I get it at cosco for about 34 bucks a case [6 gallons]and with this oil you don't get nearly the b/b as other oils chack it out,I also change every 3000 mi. good luck with your cummins

When you change your oil&filter put 10qts. of oil in the oil pan,and 1 qt. in the filter, the Cummin's in the Dodge takes 11 qts
total.

HOSSDIESEL, I changed my oil for the first time in my new truck yesterday, and I had the smell also. I checked for for leaks, or thought that I might have spilled some, but found nothing. This morning I could not smell anything. I put almost 12 quarts in the truck& filter, and my dipstick reads middle to hi range in the full.

10 quarts in pan, fill oil filter with another quart before installation for 11 quarts total. It has been determined the dip stick is just what the name implies, the oil smell is from the additive package in the CH-4 classification, it will go away with 300 to 1,000 miles of driveing (usually the lower of miles driven). Also the smell intensity and duration will vary by brand. Make sure you use oil in the CH-4/SJ class.
