How Much Oil?

This is the first message I've posted. I recently joined this site and enjoy reading the threads. I've owned my truck about a year now and love it. It's a 98. 5 2500 4X4, 5 speed, 3. 54 gears Regular Cab. My question is, when I change my oil (Every 5000 miles with Rotella and Stratapore Filter). If I fill it with 11 quarts per the owners manual, the Dipstick then reads overfull. 10 quarts makes the dipstick read right on full. So the last couple of oil changes I've just been putting in 10. I was recently talking to an owner of a 2001, 2wd and he says his dipstick reads right on full with 12 quarts.



Should I use 10 or 11 like the manual says even if it reads overfull? Did they cut the pan back to clear the front diff on 4x4's or what?

Don't be suprised if the dipstick is wrong!There was a thread on this about a year ago and I do believe an article on it in the TDR book. In the article it gives the part #'s of the wright and wrong dipsticks. My 99 has the proper part # for the dipstick and it still reads wrong!Mine gets 10. 5L in the crankcase,plus what the filter will hold and it reads about 1. 5 over.

in the filter puts me just a hair above the halfway mark between SAFE and ADD on the dipstick.

As Dave said..... put 10 quarts in the crank case and one in the filter prior installing. This will bring you up to specs and piece of mind.

i put 12v quarts in mine

but i have the Puradyn filter, takes some to fill it.

change oil every 20,000 to 25,000 miles.

Discussion:



1998 Cummins engines were built with an incorrect dipstick calibration. This incorrect marking causes an overfilled condition of about 1 1/2 quarts when at the top end of the safe zone on the dipstick. The overfill is not damaging to the engine, but can cause:



unusual engine noises

potential low power complaints

possible low oil pressure concerns due to oil aeration while driving on off-road terrain.

Yeah, I second "Formy's" question-- how about that filter you are usuing? Please pass on any info. Never heard of that one!

Dip stick.

10 quarts plus 1 in the filter causes mine to read above the full mark too, the dip stick is a little off.

You need 11 US qts. Try checking the oil when hot about 5 minutes after shut down. Check again after it sets over night. You will find it is higher after seting over night as the oil cooler and filter will bleed off into the pan. Mine reads on the mark right after shut down but is about a quart over full after seting.

Go to Puradyn.com and you will find out, it is a bypass filter system. You can order the filters with an extra "additive package" that keep the oil additives up during extended drain interevals.

These are the same people that had the old Puraliner filter system for big trucks.

From my oil anaylysis I have found that with Shell Rotella, I can change the oil at 20,000 to 25,000 miles and still have good oil.

I change all fuids and filters at that time.

2 Oil filters, 3 Fuel filters, 1 transmission filter, Wash the K&N.

This gives me a good 2 trips to Alaska and back plus some running around, I come home and do it myself.

Mine reads full when I put in twelve quarts. Go figure.

Cummins knows more then the dipsticks!!!

Use 10 quarts in crankcase and 1 quart in the filter, for 11 quarts total. Over filling could cause oil foaming and engine problems. I filled as stated above and then run truck, let truck set over night and then pulled dipstick and filed a notch where oil full is and use that as my mark guide.
