well I have 230,000 on my baby (truck) and the rings are going so while i'm in the engine I am going to add a pdr cam, 191's, 60lb springs and a 4000GSK, combine these with a #4 plate full forward, 370's, 16 cm2 housing 15. 5 degrees timing. anyone know about how much power I will have.

one more thing are these engins sleeved?? I heard once that thay wern't inorder to save weight.

if they're not then add a bored head to that list.

thanks for the help

oh yeah it's a 175 pump

Rings are gone at only 230k? Did this motor not get any maintenance? Evan Beck was telling me he pulled the head on a '96 with 260K and the cylinder walls still looked like new.

Yes these engines are not sleeved. Reboring, I have no idea, has it been torn down yet? Careful measurements with a mic will answer this.

I don't know of the maintenance before I got it but after it has been carefully maintained. unless something else would cause oil to blow out of the dipstick tube the the rings are going. no it has not been torn down yet. still in early stages of work: prices, time off, etc...

Hmm, there could be another problem causing your dipstick to blow out of the tube. There is a crankcase vent tube that releases crankcase gasses & blowby which could somehow be clogged. This needs to be wide open and unrestricted. You would have to have pretty bad blowby if this is open and it is still blowing out your dipstick. If you had bad blowby you would be leaking a lot of oil too.

I would look for other causes before tearing into it. More than likely the rings are OK and something else is the cause.

Another thing you can try: Remove the oil fill cap while running (watch out for the fan) and see how much vapor is coming out. Put your hand over the hole and seal it off, if you can feel it quickly build pressure than I would venture you have a blockage in your vent tube.

Hope this helps :)

I would guestimate HP would be somewhere between 400-425, not sure what that pump will do without a lot of tweaking. Thats a good thought on the blowby tube being plugged, if it is blowing smoke out there and also out the oil fill cap and with it putting blue smoke out the tail pipe you could be talking rings which will go bad for several reasons like poor air filter, extreme EGTs. Best to have someone look at it before tear down, may not require major surgery. Maybe a Cummins shop can diagnose it for you.

Good luck

John

I went out and pulled the fill tube lid and there was very little if any pressure. oh and there is a lot of oil leakage one the ground.

as far as bad air filter I had a K&N when I got it then went to a bhaf. as for the extreme egts I have burried the 1500 degree guage before but never for very long.

one more thing I knwo the bearings are also going because I am starting to lose oil pressure

in a way I want it to be the rings so I can really learn how the beast works but on the other hand it is getting kinda expensive but power cost money right.

I agree, the vent tube should still be checked. At idle very little blow by will get in the crank case even with bad rings. Under power the pressure in the crank case will go up and with a plugged vent the only place for the pressure to go is the dipstick.

Get under that thing with the engine off and blow up into it with the oil fill cap off. It should flow freely.

Also Cummins has a published normal for the volume of vented blow by in CFM. Even new engines have some blow by. Good luck.

Many of our wives/girlfriends have suggested to us during an argument that we sleep with our trucks, since we love them so much..... Berrigan takes this to an entirely new level! :-laf

I was thing the same thing holeshotholset put my mouth on that dirty thing I don't think so. I love my truck but there IS a limit.

well I guess I wil have to clean it up and try it. :{ even though it sound really bad

RLMFAO... ... . Matt your killin me!

Hey... I try. :-laf

Come to a NETDP meet or any event that I'm at... . you're bound to have a good time.

Life's too short to NOT have fun.

No better way to put a smile on your truck... LOL:-laf

If the vent is plugged, he has probably already blown out gaskets and will need to at least replace those.

well I blew my truck :{ . very dirty down there

but when I blew throuhg the hose it flowed freely.

so any other ideas before I rip it apart.

piers is gonna love me I don't know it that is a good thing or a bad thing.

Did you call Piers to try and ask him if maybe HE knew anything about your truck? Grilling him for answers is fun!!! :D

I called and talked to Al about the smoke and he said timing sliped. I metioned teh oil pressure and he erally didn't say anything about it. I took that as being that he agreed with me.

Does it lift the dipstick by pressure? When at idle and dipstick removed can you feel gas coming out the dipstick tube? Is the crankcase overfilled with oil?

Cummins also says a bad turbo can vent some compressed air and send it down the turbo oil return line to the crankcase.

Bad valve guides can also put turbo boost in the crankcase(intake valve).

If you could monitor crankcase pressure while driving (or on a dino) and see when pressure goes up maybe you could correlate it to something.

I'm not saying your rings are good. Maybe they are bad but at 230k miles it would be unlikely unless the previous owner did zero maintenance. Keep lookin and eliminate any thing that could malfunction and put pressure in the crankcase. Good luck

well I don't knwo about the dipstick being lifted by power when the dipstick is out then you can feel a little pressure no the crankcase in not over filled

here is a stupid question is there anyway that timing could have anythign to do with it cuz when I went down to lstdr meet a week or so ago my truck wouldn't run woth a darn white smoke everywhere and the truck sounded like it was backfireing so I think my timing sliped bad. and was just wondering if that could have anything to do wiht it.

I'm still tring to find someone that will time it for me I can't find anyone.

ANYONE THAT KNOWS HOW TO ADVANCE TIMING PM ME IF YOU ARE AROUND DFW (ENNIS TX) I WILL PAY AND SUPPLY THE DRINKS!!!

We will see if this gets anything.
