Was wondering just how much you lose when you drive off the lot with a new truck if you were to trade it in in a relatively short period of time. I love my truck, but these new AAM axles do have some inherent noise in them. D/C is really cracking down on the fix. They will probably have a solution for the 2005's. . Will I lose a ton of $$$$ by trading in my 04. 5 for an o5??? THanks! I'll probably just keep it. . love the truck and it only does it between 68-70... pretty easy range to just avoid. . LOLOL

Depends on what you bought it for. If you bought it for sticker you will lose a lot more than someone like me that bought $3,000 under factory invoice.

Make them replace your axle, they replaced mine and it's fine now.

More than a new rear end costs. If I were you I'd consider having a professional set-up the rear end gears (or replace them) if you can't get DC to do anything as far as replacement goes. Another option (assuming 2005 rear ends are compatible) would be to buy an entirely new rear end and sell your old one to an auto wrecker. Would likely still be cheaper than trading in your truck. Unless, of course, there is another reason to trade.

DPelletier,

I agree. If the problem gets worse, I might consider having a professional set up the rear end, maybe replace the gears. Do you have any idea how much that would cost? Just getting an estimate. In all honesty, I love the truck and it will probably be fine... Thanks for the replys!

roperteacher,

It's been a long time since I sold auto parts, but I would suggest $500 - $1500 depending on what all needs to be done. I think the trick is finding someone that knows what thier doing. Not trying to slam the techs at the dealership, because the're are definitely some good ones, but setting up a rear end is specialized work. If I was getting it done here I would look at a good 4x4 or HD shop that has someone that does alot of them or just send it to Hayes Dana in Vancouver.

I would suggest meeting up with some local TDR members and drive your truck and their trucks with them to compare the noise. It might be very helpful to know if your truck is any worse than others.

I know that the American Axle isn't a Dana, but both of my duallies (1996 and 2002) have had a bit of rear axle whine at certain throttle settings. My current one was much worse until I changed out the stock hypoid gear lube for Royal Purple synthetic 85W-140 at about 2000 miles. Now it has a light whine at "neutral" throttle settings - neither accelerating nor decelerating - when running empty. If I accelerate or let off the throttle slightly, it quits. If I "load" the ring and pinion by hitching up the 5th wheel, it quits.

From my experience, it's just the nature of BIG ring and pinion sets.

well here is a guy that knows first hand, trd-in was 29k for my 03

and i'm sorry but the AA are junk, gee guess what mine made a whine as well between 55-75 w/ a light load on the engine. whine is not the norm if so why didn't it make a peep until i put about 3000miles on it... . AAM REMEMBER WAS THE LOW BALL BIDDER FOR DC... ... . NOT DANA... .

Quite possibly, that's how long it takes the ring and pinion to seat in sufficiently to get a little extra backlash.

The rear end was rebuilt, not replaced... Yes I had it all done about 3000 miles ago! It's not that bad... I guess... . LOLOLOL The dealer I took it to to have it replaced , said it was not loud enough to warrant it and that it was normal. Just got back from another dealer, same story... Going to wait and see what happens... . might be normal... looking into streight piping it or bigger stereo!!!!! :)

Noisy rear axle

The ring and pinion are a matched set and are lapped on a machine that is "dimensionally correct" it is possible that a housing is machined enough out of exact spec but still within tolerance that it will be impossible to get a pattern on the ring and pinion that will be as quiet as you would like. R&p setups frequently are set up with less than perfect patterns but are quite acceptable as far as performance and reliability are concerned.

Give me a break... ITS A TRUCK. Go buy a mercedes if you cant stand the noise... Better yet go buy a GM, They love to make there trucks look and ride like a car

The loss you take is all depended on how much you paid for the truck and what kinda deal you can get. I have always bought a new car every 6-12 months and there are some cost involved but not that major if you negotiate the deal right. For example I paid $27100 ($10000 off msrp)for my 02 Ram in November of 2002 traded it in in July of 03 for $25,500 (tax credit towards the new truck $1400) Bought an 03 HO 48RE for $30500 ($8000 off msrp)

due to fuel pump problems (multiple) traded it in in february 04 and got $29500 (1600 tax credit) and bought the new 04. 5 for for $33500 ($7000 off msrp). So to sum this up yes there is a loss and the loss would not be on the money paid for the trucks but money lost in interest and payment. But you take that away from maint. cost and tires and all and everything kinda works out. :p

thats one way to justify it to the wife :-{}

X cummins X, I don'd give a #$^%$^#%$ about the noise. I have been driving dodges since 89. Talk about LOUD! I want to make sure that the noise I am hearing is NORMAL... so if it isin't, I can take steps to fix it. SO that way, down the road I don't have a 40,000 truck, 20,000 trailer, and 100,000 dollars worth of performance horses dead along side the road out in the middle of no where because I didn't take care of a problem early. This noise I have never heard before on any of my trucks... But it appears to be normal and the engine is so quiet that if it were on the others I wouldn't hear it anyway! LOLOL
