How much weight on the tailgate?

We were doing some construction work today and had 12 bags of #60 concrete sitting on the tailgate- that would be 720 lbs. Probably not the best thing for the tailgate cables or the hinge pins . Does our tailgates have an actual "rating" ? I've done this many times before so I assume it's not an issue, just wondering though... ... ... ...

Thought I read here that the cables are suppose to slip before the tailgate is hurt, but dont know the rating. Yea, not much help with your question

Don't try that with a Furd. A guy here at work had a 2001 350 with a V-10 and loaded his ATV up and bent the heck out of his tailgate. Helped him take it off and that thing his way heavier than the one on my truck but it's really weak. I load my Polaris Sportsman in my truck and it's 700lbs and 200lbs of me on it, and I've had no problems at all doing this since I've owned the truck.

the weak point on the gen 2 tailgates is the upper corners. They're made of nothing but thin sheet metal and have no reiforcing. The gen 1 tailgates were much tougher. Failure on Gen 2 tailgates almost always starts with cracking at the corners.

I don't know about the tailgate, but I was at Home Depot the other day getting a pallet of concrete pavers. They dropped that thing right in the bed fom the forklift and the rearend barely went down



Needless to say the HD guys and a number of bystanders were impressed, since another guy there was getting a similar load in an F350 and the thing looked like it was gonna drag it's butt all the way home.

I slide 1 ton pallets of wood in the back of mine everyday since it was new. Have seen a problem yet. Just don't bump the top of the tail gate with a fork lift. :{

I've carried a Lance camper or double pallets of grass in mine, but had to weld reinforcements on the front bed supports. They rotted in half due to the location of the holes for the tie down hooks.
