Hey guys,

I need a little help here. I'm not exacly a "by the numbers" person, but my father-in-law is.

Here is the deal.

He has a fifth wheel that weighs 10,000lbs. His truck is an 01, 2wd, lwb, standard cab, 6 speed, 3. 54.

He is worried that if he gets the 100 gallon auxilary fuel tank he will be over the "proper" weight limit of the truck.

Anybody care to help me out with some numbers?

Thanx.

Diesel weighs somewhere around 7lbs/gal. + whatever the tank weighs.

The GCWR for his truck is 20,000lbs. If the truck weighs 7k, 700# for fuel in aux. tank, 150# for the new tank, 150# for fifthwheel hitch?, 10k for trailer, he would be in the neighborhood of 18,000lbs. He should have some extra room, depending on whatever else he has to take along.

That's fine for GCVWR, but he'll already be over GVWR. His truck is rated at 8800 lbs GVWR. A 5er weighing 10,000 lbs has a pin weight of around 2,000 - 2500 lbs. Truck will weigh about 6500 lbs.

6500 + 2000 = 8500 plus fuel, passengers, etc.

If he wants to stay within his ratings, he shouldn't add the fuel tank.

Disclaimer: This is an example only. The tow vehicle and trailer need to be weighed to get the exact weights.

I'm a little bit of an outlaw but you asked for my opinion none the less. The truck will handle the weight just fine and RV's are exempt from virtually all of the weight regulations so what's there to worry about?

Thanx for the replies

Thanx for the replies.

I will give him the #'s and he can do whatever he wants. I really don't care to add my 2 cents. If something ever happened, I don't want anything to do with it.

Best thing I learned since marriage... . Stay away from inlaws...

Nobody said being overweight was a "problem", but Eric asked about the "proper" weight limit of the truck and I assume by that he was talking about the GVWR and GCVWR. The fuel tank will put him over his GVWR. Period.
