Well fellas, school is almost over, and I am gonna have extra cash to spend on my truck, I just don't want another truck, I love mine. Saving for my next modification, which will be a 5-speed, how much $ do you guys think I'll spend?? $2000 is about my limit.

If I were you, I'd find someone that would swap with ya. I kind of have the urge to go drag-racing and I sometimes wish I had an auto. I'm sure there are others in your area with the same thought.

Not to get you down or anything, but when ATS swapped Eric McBride's 5 speed for an auto they spent 6 grand. :{ I would definetely look into upgrading your auto; it will be sweet.

Where is Iredell?

Fellow TDR member Cumminsgetme is a good friend of mine. His 5-speed is driving him nuts. He has a Sach's clutch and the upgraded 5th gear mainshaft from Standard trans.

He recently broke his 5th gear nut and also damaged one of the other gears. He has rebuilt it, but understands that it will only happen again in the future with 500+ HP.

He wants to swap to an automatic for competition reasons. You two might need to meet.

His truck is a '94 so we could swap PCM's and just about everything else. Both trucks are 2wd as well.

He's leaving for Vegas either today or tomorrow and will be fishing in Alaska until Muncie. So he won't be near a computer.

I'll offer my shop to do the swap if you guys are interested.

hey man, Iredell is 30 miles east of Stephenville, and 80 miles south west of ft worth, what is your phone number so we can talk, my automatic is driving me nuts, it would be great to swap with someone. My auto has about 40,000 miles on it, and I have recipts from Chrysler where it was rebuilt. It was rebuilt at Elder Dodge, that is in your neck of the woods isn't it? Anyway, hit me back, cause I am very interested

This is a perfect example of what has driven us to build the auto trans and converter package to maximize the low end power the Cummins engine develops. The optimal package any one could want is a variable transmission. A variable transmission allows the engine to stay in it's peak power band wile accelerating through the gears. With a standard it is not possible to achieve this due to it's gear selection unless you were to slip the clutch, which would burn up the clutch (unless its Peters clutch "South Bend). The ATS automatic transmission/TripleLok combination is the closest thing to a variable transmission that you can get. The fluid coupling allows the engine to accelerate to peak torque and accelerate through the power curve before shifting into the next gear. Once the vehicle has accelerated to a higher speed the triple clutch torque converter clutch engages removing the slip from the torque converter and you have a one to one connection. There are very good results that can be achieved from standard transmissions and automatics, if you want an automatic transmission that will provide performance and reliability the ATS TripleLok converter/Transmission might fulfill the need your are after without breaking your piggybank.

Clint,

An efficient CVT (constantly variable transmission) would be great in our applications. Rev to peak HP and just hold it there as the transmission accelerates the vehicle. That would be great.

But a 4 speed automatic with a locked up torque converter is far from a CVT. A manual with more gear selections has better opportunity to keep the engine at peak HP than a locked up auto.

I just love going through the gears, and blowin the smoke. Cumminsgetme and myself may both get what we want with a swap, man I love this TDR website, and all the people that are on here to make it possible. If anyone has swapped auto to 5-speed, or can just give me a list of exactly what is different between the 2, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks guys,

Willie

Boy I'd love to find a swap like that:D Bein a gear jammer from way back I wanted the 5 speed, but they're next to impossible to find around my area used. (Hmmm maybe no one wants to part with them:confused: ) I couldn't beat the price I paid for my truck but the auto scares the pee outta me.

I just got very very lucky, I guess if you had a 5-speed, it would be easy to find someone to swao, but who knows. I'm sure glad Cumminsgetme likes to go fast, cause now we both win, he can go fast, and I can blow smoke finally:D The 5-speed will come in handy for towing too. Man, I am very excited about the swap, can't wait:D
