A cord of wood is 4x4x8 and a face cord is 4x8x16"(or the width of the wood) You typically need 2. 5-3 face cords to equal a full cord. When we burnt strictly wood at my fathers house we would go through 6-8 cord a year. His house was originally built for electric heat and is very well insulated. We would run the stove hot to prevent creosote build up and have the back door open most of the winter to control the temps in the house.

5-6 cord for me. I'll burn anything that will fit in the door (hardwood or softwood). I have an old fisher cast iron woodburner, it heats the whole house 2800 sq. ft. two story. I get wood where ever i can find it for free. I will buy slab wood when its available, but its hard to find now because most sawmills chip it for paper plants.

Here on the Queen Charlotte Islands, we burn around 8 cords of Yellow Cedar and Hemlock between September and May. I usually haul a full wheel-barrow load once per day from the wood shed to the house. Indeed, it was actually the 10 cords of wet yellow cedar that I gathered this past spring that sent my 1st gen W-250 CTD out to pasture. 10 loads of wood (heaped over the cab, otherwise it won't be a full cord) took its toll on the salt ravaged frame and it was just a bit too much work to keep it alive.
