I change my oil and oil filter every 12,000 to 15,000 miles and do the fuel filter at the same time. I changed the diffs, x-fer and transmission at about 50,000 and gonna do it again this spring at around 150,000.

BTW, all oil samples have come back good from Blackstone.

JHardwick: Your comments are encouraging. BTW, I finally got to use your oil filter wrench a couple of weeks ago. Worked great, but I need to get a 1/2" extension. What length works best?

I just had my truck in the 15K service and changed the fuel filter and they said it was pretty dirty so now i carry a spare in case i get a bad shot of fuel.

klenger: I'm thinking I use a 12" and a 6" extension. I slide under the front, pull the plug, change the filter, put the plug in and fill 'er up.

I've been hauling horses professionally since last fall and I can rack up that kind of mileage in a month, so I am generally changing oil monthly and sending in a sample every other change.

I change mine every second oil change or 10k miles. The filter doesn't look any too clean when I change it. When changing the filter don't forget to bump the starter and then wait for the lift pump to cycle before starting to purge the system of air.

I change mine in the fall just before we go into winter, about 10,000/12,000 miles. I only buy fuel from a know good source. I never buy cut rate fuel from off brand stations.

Unscrew the top of the filter housing... the filter will come out with it... unsnap the filter from the lid, install the new filter and the lid oring... screw it back together... VERY easy compared to the one that drops the bottom of the filter housing.

Yes, it is very simple. . but you left out one thing... drain the cannister before putting the new filter in. If the old fuel in the canister is over the sealing surface of the new filter, some unfiltered fuel could be sucked in which probably won't cause a problem but why risk it? Also, someone mentioned bumping the starter to fill it back up after the filter change. That is a 2nd gen requirement. It is not required to bump the starter, but just turn the key "on". I usually do this twice, then start the truck with no problem.

I had mine changed once so far at 10,000 miles and the dealer charged me $250. 00! I am not going to do that every other oil change thats for sure. :{

Did he at least buy you a drink first? :p ;) :-laf

Dude, its so easy. Any one with basic tools and a little know how can do it. I'll have to do a write up on it next time I change mine. I'm sure you could do it and save yourself some major green. Put that money where its supposed to go... bombs!!

BTW, I change mine every 10k. Easy on the math. :-laf

There is something to be said about a dirty filter (to a certain extent) cleans better than a brand new one... ..... IMO every 5000 miles is overkill and is not doing any more than the recommended 15,000. In fact it might be doing less.

That is a crime. You have been mugged, call the police!!!!

It is easier to do than changing your oil.

FNG here, first this site is the greatest thing in the world for peeps like me,first diesel, blah blah blah.

I had to look up a fuel filter in Genos when i read this,$11. 95 fleet guard and they charged $250. 00. PLEASE dont think im laughing at you,im just in aww. From the sounds of it there isnt that much time involved,15 min,how can they get away with that?

Thanks guys for all the help and insite you ALL have supplied me!

The Dodge dealership charges 40 some dollars for the filter alone, thats crazy compared to Geno's. The Dodge filter even says stratapore right on it!! As far as bumping the starter to cycle the pump goes the 2005 manual says to do it so I do it.

My way

Here's a different take on things. The way I figure it, fuel filtration capacity is more a function of engine operating hours than mileage. So I change my factory filter every 300 hours (which, for me, happens to work out to around 10k miles usually - pure coincidence).

I agree very much with MABurns - a filter filters better as it fills with contaminants. Changing them early won't necessarily help anything.

Rbattle I believe you are correct, the fuel filter is probably rated at a amount of fuel that it can filter which would coincide with amount of hours. The only variable would be amount of load (fuel rate).

Dave

Absolutely, an engine running hard pulling a 12,000+ pound trailer has to filter almost twice the fuel as a unloaded vehicle over the same miles.
