Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) How often to change fuel filter?

How often should the fuel filter be changed, and should it be more often with the new ULSD?

I do mine at 15000 and it is fine. Fuel should not make a difference IMHO

I change my oil every 5k & fuel filter every other time. Works for me... Simple to track as well. LF & FF on the 5's & just the LF on the 10's... .

I have only gotten 7,000 miles out of the last three filters. When my fuel pressure drops to 11. 5 or so at idle and will hold at 10 while cruising but will dip to 8 while towing I change it out. Then my pressures jump right back to 13. 5 and 12 underload.

Fuel filter every 6k along with the oil and oil filter. Fuel filters are a cheap investment in the health of your fuel system, IMHO.

I have changed mine every other oil change ~10K. But some are recommending changing it every oil change for a while because of the ULSD. It has been cleaning the junk out of the storage tanks and your fuel tank.



I went to the 7 micron filter and changing every oil change because of this. I figure it's good insurance to prevent a fuel system problem.

Oil every 5k and fuel every 15k. That way it is easy for me to remember. Also i keep a little notebook in the console and write down dates, miles, and what i did for service. That C. R. S. just gets worse with every birthday. Randy :-laf :-laf

I might as well just change it every oil change then. Is every 5K an acceptable oil change service interval for a daily driver?

yeah, I change my oil every 5k on my daily driver. Sometimes a little sooner. As far as the fuel filter goes, doing it based on pressure isn't a bad way. I've seen them get dirty pretty quick, 2k or so. That doesn't happen often but from time to time it does. I had a filter on my FASS get dirty and clogged up after 10k once and they're supposed to last 30k or something like that. I'd at least check it every oil change. Thats what I do with my Ford that is still running paper filters.

I change when I see a 2psi drop in fuel pressure at cruise. I have had filters plug in as little as 4k miles! I must have bought a load of dirty fuel!!! Usually, they last around 30k miles.



Acually you guys who are changing your filters really often thinking you are doing your VP a favor have it backwards. The more nearly a filter is to plugged the finer the particles it will filter out... the more efficient the filter. When the fuel pressure drops, that is a worse problem than a new and less efficient filter, so it is time to change.

Heck, I use an alcohol-pen to write them on the top of the windshield. Every fill-up I look down to the odometer and then up to see when the oil/fuel/air/trans fluid/coolant was last changed.
