I have a Peakapoo? that is 18 years old and still going strong. I give my nine year old Sammy the credit with keeping him going. Anyone else with a dog this old? Ken

The oldest dog I had lived to be 17, he was a mixed breed terrier that we had to put down due to his hips/ loss of bladder control. His name was Dodger and I had many lost nights sleep after his loss as he was my first dog, got him at Christmas when I was 7, said goodbye when I was 24, right after Christmas. Alot of memories there.

My second dog only made it to 12, her name was Ruger and she was a Bloodhound mix. She died from cancer, broke the heart of my oldest daughter, along with me and my wife.

Now I have the two drooling giants listed at the link below, they aren't know for long lives, maybe 10-12 years at best, then the heart strings will get pulled again.

My bird dog is 3(English pointer/Border collie mix) Should be far from now but the family already dreads that day.

I have a Great Dane...

She is 1yr old. They say you only get 7-9yrs out of 'em. It's gonna kill us when the time comes..... She is an awesome dog. She thinks she is a human!

I have a Boston Terrier named Maxie. She's 11 and I couldn't love her more! She's like a little daughter to me! Yes, they do think that they're human, and I, personally believe that they are in their own way. God gave certain birds the ability to talk. I think that he messed up when he denied the dog that gift.

Now

I have a old mutt at about 13 years right now and a young PitBull that is about a year. I am having a problem with the youngin. The old dog is getting old and a little sore with arthritis,we give him meds for this. At night I put them up in the same pen,it has a well insulated house with straw in it. The problem is that the old dog gets bumped or stepped on by the youngin and snaps. Well you know who the winner is going to be here. Last night the youngin left old Boodro bloodied, before I could get out there to stop it.

I don't want to get rid of the pup,I do love him. But I won't let him chew on the old man,he has been a faithful and awesome dog. Looks like I separate the pen this weekend and build another house. I just hope that they can get along outside the pen,Dozer does like to push him around(mostly to get attention). Hence the name "Dozer".

Dezlpwr 7-9 is about right. I had two danes and both died at 7. My wife wants another one but I'm reluctant because of the short life. We have a birddog 13yr, birddog mix, 3, blue tick coonhound 3, and a lab/beagle mix 1. The 13yr old is my wife's baby and I know that when the time comes, I'm going to have to bury my wife with her.

We're on our 3rd & 4th Shelties. The first lived to be 15, the second (Beau) we had to put down due to liver failure at 13 years, 10 months. Man, that one hurt - old Beau was my best buddy! He loved to camp and go anywhere with me in the car or truck. :(

We currently have a 10 year old Sheltie (Brittany) with arthritis in the hips - although she's been on Rimadyl for years, I don't know how long she'll make it. The other Sheltie, a male tri-color, is Bandit - he's 2 years old. He loves to sit on the flip-down console and drive the truck with me.

Had a Pomeranian/Chiuaua(sp?) that we put down at 19, had to lock it in the kitchen cause it would piddle anywhere, then fall down. Couldnt see, hear, teeth falling out, etc.

Cockapoo put down at 17.

Cat lived just over 20. I lived in Jackson at the time, parents in Utah. When I would go home to visit the cat got a shower. Gave him the usual shower, after he purred like usual, went and lay on the bed as usual, hour later all gone.

Sounds just like one I had. Lost him at 17 too, thats been close to 10 years ago. It still tears me up to think about it.

Our dog is gonna turn 15 christmas day. His name is Cyrus, he is an american staff. Other than being a little deaf and blind, sorta like me. He's going strong. Not looking forward to the day of his departure it gonna kill us.

That is almost where we are now. Lock him in the bathroom when we are gone to long, Also his hind legs are starting to go. We do not let him do stairs any more. He has been my wifes dog since she was 16, I will be the one to put him down. Not looking forward to it. :( Ken

One of the toughest parts of owning animals is letting go when it's time and knowing when to let go. We had to have our 15 year old min pin put down last May. She had survived lukemia twice so we figured she'd had a good life.

Small dogs live longer then big ones. Is it because we have them longer that they seem to affect us (IMHO) more when the time comes to part? Or is it just the personality?

I used to have boxer's. Trouble was, they were barely making it to ten years of age. Cancer was pretty common.

Now if you want to talk about an animal with a lifespan, most of my horses are arabian's. They go 30 years on average. My oldest are 21 and 23. I put one down at 7 after keeping her going for two years even though it was hopeless. Not fun.

1/4 horse,I have a little story for ya. The wife and I were looking at a small ranch near here for sale. We arived and a lady around 40ish met us and started to show us the house and out buildings. She was telling us that her husband was a vet and they were planning to move onto a larger ranch. As we rounded the barn I saw the oldest horse I have ever seen, this critter was so swayback its belly was almost dragging on the ground. Well,I couldn't stand it and asked her"Mame, how old is that horse"?

She said she had the horse since she was three! She was forty three!

This poor old critter would take a step and then a nap!I told the wife that the old horse probably takes a big hunk of her husbands time just keeping him healthy... ...

Mom has a brittany that turned 14 on Pearl Harbor Day. He is almost completely deaf and nearly blind. He must be autistic because everything has to be done the same every day or he throws a fit. He gave us a scare back in August when we were moving Mom into her new house and they had just started filling the swimming pool. The first thing that Dandy did was run to the back yard and jump into a five foot deep pool with less than a foot of water in it. He had a brain hemmorage (sp) and was disoriented for a while. A few weeks later he ran away and was gone for nearly 24 hours. Mostly now he just stays in HIS room of the house and tries to close the door to his room when someone comes over. He will be missed.

Champane Flight, yep that's up there. Probably the teeth are worn down or missing. That leads to the biggest problem, keeping weight on. Oldest one I ever heard of was supposed to be 48 when it died.

diesel Dog is to your left she is 11 and runs the same as a pup. She rides in my Vette's and knows to drop on the center console upon hearing the exhaust. She leans in the corners too. She is the boss of my other 4 dogs @ 11 lb. She goes to work with me a lot.

Leo is a pound dog and 70 lb. and 12

Fred is 100 pound mutt I found at a construction project, he was born there on my birthday. 2 years old

Jake is his brother that I gave my neighbor. My neighbor took him to the pound and I rescued him again. 75 lb.

Rose is Fred and Jakes mother a full Shepard and about 7 or 8. She is 80 lb. Rose Fred and Jake live outside and tear up the back yard which was sod.

Dale was a dog I had as a kid and she lived till 19 years 11 months and dropped dead one day in the back yard and was in good shape till then.

Then I got Lucy and she died a few years ago she was 19 years and 8 months old. She got cancer behind her eye and I had it removed. Then she got it on her jaw different cancer and her jaw was shortened. Then 3-4 months later her kidneys failed.

Nothing like a dog! Women come and go but a dog is a lifetime friend.

Doc, I think it's seven dog years to one human year and for horses I think it's three horse years to on human year.

If I am correct then a 48 year old horse would be equal to a 20 year old dog.
