I have an 04. 5 with smarty jr, pacbrake, K&N deep filter, replaced silencer with 5" tube and added 4" intake on bottom of stock airbox W/18" pipe.

It seems that the turbo takes too long to spool up and the black smoke is embarrassing. I can't really hear the turbo working (whinning) like I thought I should. I keep the JR on level 2 (CGVW) is 34k. I have a Hot Shot rig and pull alot of heavy loads.

I think I need more air volume but don't know what if anything can be done.

I have no gauges, had a 97 and a 01 which both seem to have a stronger turbo. I could hear them working.

Any advise would be appreciated, not interested in duel turbos, maybe a replacement or maybe mine is just junk? I don't know where to go from here.

Thanks again.

i thought yur truck date and up had the smaller exhaust housing? it should spool quick, mine is screamin every time i mash the go stick... when did you notice this, after your mods? or before?

I have the 4" exhaust w/ no muffler.

I have never herd the turbo work.

I bought the truck in Jan 08.

If I shift at 2700 or so and keep the rpms up, it works better.

unless you are luggin the engine, not letting the turbo spool before you shift.

if it is a stock turbo, it should scream with pouring that much fuel at it and choke out the turbo. mine is all stock and will only smoke when mashed to the floor. has it been doing this since you have had the truck or is this some new?

The Smarty may be the problem, they have a smoking problem at that level because they fuel so hard down low. You need more timing to offset it. Do you get the same smoke on SW1 or stock?

Check all your CAC boots and connections to make sure they are tight also. You really need a boost gauge to see if it is a boost problem or something else.

The stock turbo on these trucks is the fastest spooling turbo you will find, much better across the board than a lot of aftermarkets, and head and shoulders above the HX series on the gen 2 trucks, IF you don't have other problems.

Need to do a little trouble shooting before getting too worried about problems. :)

on top of that, guages, unless yu have them already... . sorry, i know a bit on the boxes and programers but not enough to give advice about them and their quirks...

It started when I put on the JR.

Level 1 has a lttle smoke.

Never had it on level 3.

At stock it just shoots a little smoke when shifting.

I did the update from the MADDs website. That helped quite a bit.

When you guys talk about lugging the engine, at what rpm and below is lugging? I believe I shift around 2300 to 2600, then it drops 1000 rpm.

When you let off the pedal and let the exhaust brake work, then mash the gas it smokes a bunch there too.

I am an old school big truck driver (learned to drive with gauges). When the turbo bearings started to go out it would start excessive smoking (and make the CB radio squeel) That is all the knowledge I have about turbos.

So this stock turbo is one of the best they put on them? What is the super B turbo?

I thought that with this type of set up you really don't hear the turbo as much? When i installed an open filter with a heat shield it was like the turbo climbed into my passanger seat.

same for me

I to have the same mods as you and my smarty still smokes alot if I lug when shifting, It is better with the newer download but still smokes. I can hear my turbo alot though since I put on the cool hose, it doesn't drive me crazy but I can hear it alot more now.

Have you updated your JR. ? the new update does less smoke. You are fairly stock so you shouldn't need any other intake stuff.

It seems like you are lugging it a little to much. the Jr fuels hard at low rpms and if you stand on in the lower rpms it will black out the lane next to you.
