how to BOMB a chainsaw?

I know I know, "buy a bigger saw, moron... "

Don't go lean with it... it'll burn up in short order.



Check out what the snowmobile/dirtbike guys are doing with their engines... I bet they have some tricks.



Usually... a good port job, bigger carb jet(s), and a pipe on the hot side does 'em pretty good.

I think you can get performance mufflers for the 021. I know you can for the 038. That will bump up the peformance. You can lean out the carb Oo. but that won't last too long.

The 021 just does not make enough power to run a full chisel cut.

Get an 046mag. The 046 should not cost you more than $700/750 with 2 bars (32" and 20")and 4/5 chains, depending on your dealer.

To be honest, I can not remember just how much I have spent on saws, but they are a great investment.

The chain is one place. I cut that thing in front of the cutter all the way down. Is it the depth chingaso? Anyway, like limiting boost with your right foot, you can control chain speed based on wood type easier. Really sped up cutting.



The way to make more power with the same cu. in. is rpm. Which is unfortunate for chain/bar life. Some of the guys were making their own bar oil, for hi rev'ing, by mixing good oil, STP & something else, like transmission oil. They heated it so it'd mix. With your high rev'er, you'll need something trick for bar lube ... maybe synthetic?



See if you can get your hands on another piston & rings. Take the top end of yours apart & ck the skirt of the piston against the intake & exhaust ports. Removing the skirt some on the intake & exhaust side, "skirting", works to get more fuel in, if yours is set up that way. We BOMBed a Vespa once ... couldn't believe the difference. Oo.

I believe it is called a rake.

Bad news, cutting the rake too low will cause the saw to take too aggressive a bite, and bog the motor.

On the other side, not taking anything off the rake, and the chain will not work no matter how sharp it is.

yes it is called a rake and cutting it to low will also increase the chance the saw will want to kick back

The 088 is a really nice saw... I went with the 039, I could use a little more power but not much. I cut down everything I see when when I get in the mood, more power here would mean more poor trees have to die. The 20" bar is very nice alson.

Stihl renumbered all their saws lately. The model numbers don't start with zeros anymore. I used to have an 032 and the don't make that anymore. Hmm.



I'm going to take the 440 (old number system it was called the 044 I guess) out for its first trials tomorrow. I'm looking forward to how this saw does in large hardwood. Should be fun.



HOBrian: I looked at the 880, but a little over the top for me. The guys at the store were trying to talk me down to a 360, but I wanted the 460 (out of stock), so I settled on the 440.
