Ok, what's this talk of upgrading the fuel system, banjo bolts, new fuel lines, etc. ? What is the recommended BOMB for the fuel system and where is the place to get the parts? Also, is it a easy project or one I'll need help with?

Ray, looking at your mods, probably just drilling out the banjo bolts (5) and installing a pusher pump (Carter4600-7psi-from Summit) back by the tank will overpower any fuel system weaknesses in your truck. The SS braided fuel line looks cool though. There are a number of members out there that will sell a complete kit, or threads that give part#'s from various suppliers to allow you to buy the parts individually.



My truck is equipped similar to yours, and I just drilled out the banjo's and installed a Carter 4601Hp-15psi back by the tank. Unless my filter is getting dirty, all I can get is a two PSI drop in pressure idle to full load (33psi boost).
 
I installed the Pusher pump after hearing about it on here and within a month, i was reading stories about how 20psi was bad for the injection pump, and it would void the warrantee, etc, etc,. So i disconnected and bypassed the pump (It is still in place, but disconnected). This was 6 months ago, has something changed where proof has come that it is totally safe to use a pusher pump?.

I haven't heard that. The only thing I heard is that it creates a hard to start condition on some trucks.



I wired my pusher into the same wires as the lift pump. It reduces power for starting. So basically the pusher isn't running at start up. I don't think I would go with the high pressure pusher like some have. Doesn't really seem necessary. I have the Carter 4070 it's a low pressure high volume pump and compliments the new lift pump nicely. I pegged my 0-16 gauge over the top so I'm waiting on a Dakota Digital 0-30 gauge for more accurate readings. Based on where the gauge sits now I estimate I'm at 18 psi idle and only loses a pound or two at WOT.



I'll report back when the new gauge comes in.

Well, with my added Carter 4600, I'm seeing 25 psi at idle right at the VP44, and normally about 22 psi down the road - the absolute LOWEST I have seen it is around 18 psi at WOT in the Sierras pulling our 7000 lb 5er with the Comp on 5x3... ;) :D



Guess I'll be one of the first to see if steady pressure at and above 20 psi will hurt the VP44...
 
EMDDIESEL - there were some people that questioned whether 20 psi would cause a problem, but noone that had data to show that. I've posted this probably 50 times now at least - when I was considering putting a pusher pump on I talked with both a D/C and a Cummins engineer responsible for our engines in our trucks and both of them said that the more pressure the better and that 20 psi would be no problem. The only problem they said you may have is a hard start problem if the pressures are above 7 psi while cranking. At least two vendors have tested fuel pressures up to 60 psi (DTT and TST) and didn't have any problem with the VP44's on those trucks, TST ran one on the dyno for over an hour at 60 psi with no problem. I now have over 45,000 miles and a year and a half on mine running 20 psi with no problems. The warranty question is another thing entirely - since there are dealers that want to void peoples warranties for as little a thing as putting on tires that are larger than stock pretty much anything you do to your truck "could" void your warranty. Not one person has reported a problem with their VP44 after adding a pusher pump and many have done so. The only problem due to high pressures was one guy that had a leak at the fuel filter cannister and he was running around 50 psi as I remember it.
 
Where is the best place to get these Carter pumps from? I am wanting to upgrade the fuel system before i get my edge comp. Thanks.

I got my Pusher pump from Enterprise. I hooked it up following there instructions and when i would turn the key on and bump the starter, BOTH pumps would turn on. The truck started fine though.

My question now is, since the pusher pump relay is activated by the stock lift pump turning on, that means it is on whenever the truck is running. Is this how it is supposed to be?. I dont remember when, but awhile back i thought i read that somebody said the Pusher pump was only supposed to turn on at WOT or something to that nature and NOT be on at all times, is that right?, or am i dreaming reading that, i really dont remember. HELP!

I see no reason not to run it while the engine is on. The fuel lubricates the VP44 so any extra can't hurt in that respect. If you have your relay hooked to the stock lift pump wires then it probably doesn't get enough voltage to toggle until running. I had a thread on this a while back. It was easier for me at the time to mount the relay in the cab and can hear it toggling because of the lower voltages to the stock pump.



In your case it's already there and hooked up so why not run it?

The pusher pump should be running any time the stock lift pump runs. The main reason I went to the pusher pump was to try to extend the life of the stock lift pump. I had gone through 4 stock lift pumps in the first 60,000 miles (actually in 36,000 miles because I bought the truck used with 24,000 miles on it). One pump lasted less than 3,000 miles. The spec on the stock lift pump from Carter is that it's supposed to be no more than 3 feet from the fuel source - it's more like 10-12 feet on my truck. The pusher pump is there to force feed the stock pump so that it doesn't have to suck fuel all the way from the tank. In my case I've put over 50,000 miles on it now and I haven't replaced another lift pump. A second advantage is that I lose almost no pressure at WOT whereas it would drop way off before. There were some people that were considering wiring up a pusher pump to only turn on at WOT but I know of noone that actually did it - that's probably what you are thinking of. I wouldn't want to do it that way because it would defeat the primary reason I put it on there.



You can get the low pressure high volume (7 psi, 100 gph) carter pump setup from Enterprise Engine, and Ted Jannety that I know of (other vendors sell it too but I can't think of their names right now, ADT may be one of them). All of those vendors supply it as a kit with all the needed pieces including the relay, etc. You can also buy the pump through Summit or Jegs but then you have to source the other necessary parts elsewhere.

I bought the kit from Enterprise, so that means they would have sent me the High volume, low pressure pump, right?. I dont remember seeing any markings on it, thats why i ask, but ill be reconecting it tommorow since you guys put me at ease.
 
Steve turned me on the the Carter 4600 - and Jegs as a supplier, bought the pump alone for about $75 - another $10 for a Radio Shack relay, and everything is working great! As far as fixing the pump to only operate at WOT - unless there is a low-restriction bypass provided during the times ther pump is NOT in use, the pump intended to HELP, ends up being yet another restriction in fuel flow... NOT a good thing!;) :rolleyes: :p
 
how much for the kit

So how much is everyone paying for the kit?? With the 7psi 100gpm pusher, what are the psi at idle/ what about WOT? Thanksb
