How to check Honda trans fluid?

I recently bought a '92 Honda Civic LX with 130K miles to be my commuter car. It's a very clean little car and so far has averaged 38. 44 mpg. I want to service the automatic transmission, but I'm not sure about the procedure to check the oil level. Should it be running or not? Park or neutral? I plan to use Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle ATF which has the Honda Z1 spec. Any advice will be apreciated.

That mileage figure shows what was (is) possible before cars were loaded up with thousands of pounds of unnecessary gimmicks.

From what I have gathered, it gets checked warm with the engine not running. I don't have the owner's manual for this 18 year old car. I know it's old, but seriously why would anyone take the manual out of the car? Also, the dipstick only has a crosshatched area. There is no writing.
