I'm thinking about buying a 2006 and was curious about the same thing. I remember seeing threads long ago on earlier trucks and how to disengage the front axle while in 4wd low, seems to me it was electrically operated or something. How about some new responses here to get this thread going? Thanks

The late 2002 and newer trucks don't have the CAD (axle disconnect) therefore they are unable to do the 4 wheel low like the other 2nd gens. The only way I know to do it is to buy manual hubs which are expensive. There is a thread around here somewhere about a group purchase on hubs but it's probably over.

The reason they default to 4wd in LR is because it would be possible to overtorque one axle. In 4wd it splits the load.

So,,,, you really don wanna disengage 4wd in low range.

You really do want the front axle disengaged, if not, it will bind and break something, especially manuevering tightly on hard a surface. Not having the front axle disconnect on my '02 was my only disappointment getting rid of my '00 4wd.

I'll probably opt for the expensive lockout hubs sometime in the future.

The hub kit is made by Dynatrac. I would have gotten in on the group purchase but I couldn't scare up the funds. If it makes you feel any better you've got it easy, try the same manuever with a high performance clutch

Wiredawg,, what you are saying is true,, I guess I never thought about using low range to maneuver on hard surface.

Anytime I'm in low range its for power and traction in a field or hard pull. .

Your point is well taken!
