How to disengage 4wd in low side of transfer case

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

Should I correct speedo or not.

35000 miles, what should I have done before warranty expires?

You need to have lockable front hubs to do this. Good news is they are now available, bad news is the kit is about $1600 not installed. Search the 3rd gen forum for the thread on "servicable locking hubs" or somthing like that.

I'm confused, why do you need to disengage four wheel drive to back a trailer? You needed four wheel drive pulling the trailer, back it up in four wheel drive. Not to be a smart___, but with my truck I put it in neutral and turn the selector switch from 4L or 4H to 2H and its a done deal.

I believe what Dixon is asking is how to disengauge 4wd but keep it in low range to make backing up a trailer into tight spots easier... As to how to do it... Im still trying to find that out myself...

Maybe I should rephrase the question: Does anyone know how to install a bypass switch to disengage the 4wd when transfer case is in 4 low to stop the truck from bucking & jumping on asphalt when backing trailer in a crooked driveway. On the generation 2 there was an article about this situation & how to wire the switch in. Does anyone know how to do this on generation 3 trucks. (04 automatic)

There is no simple way to do this on a 3rd gen. On 2nd gens you could install a vacuum switch that would disconnect the front axle so you were effectively using 2Low. But on a 3rd gen, the front axle is engaged all the time.

So the only option is to install the lockout hubs so you can disconnect the front hubs from the axles.

What about a drive line dis-connect like what they use to make towing a rear drive vehicle only put it on the front?

how much would that cost vs the locking hubs???

and if you are on pavement all the time, you could just drop the front driveshaft and leave it in the garage or bed... ? i am pretty sure there is no slip yokes on the front shaft to worry about coming out with no shaft there. .

Considering the current group buy on the hub kit its still about a 2/3rds less. Might be an idea for those that need 2 low on pavement.

The one thing I don't like about the hub kit is that it looks like it will push the wheels out farther (like adding a spacer plate) but it would be nice to unlock the front differential.
