I need to fix the ATF leak shown in the photo. It's at the front of the 241LD transfer box near where it connects to the 47RE transmission. I dumped 2 quarts of ATF on the DIL's garage floor over a few months when I went back to the UK, and this is not the way to win friends and influence people.
Is this caused by the gasket leaking where the drops are, or is this an internal leak of some other part? The fluid is leaking from the transmission, not the transfer box. The transmission pan gasket is dry.
I have the factory service manual. Is this repair just a matter of removing the transfer box, and installing a fresh gasket? I do all my maintenance, recently including replacing rear axle seals and bearings, renewing injector sealing washers, and replacing the radiator. However, I'm in the middle of a field with fire ants for company, so I may end up taking this to a shop. Either way, I need to understand what is causing this leak.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Nick.

The seal is leaking on the output shaft of the transmission, only fix is to replace it and also replace the input seal for the transfercase while it's off.

With no special tools, and laying on my back in a field with sand blowing around, that sounds well above my pay grade, so I'll be looking for a good transmission shop. Thanks to you guys I now know what needs to be done. Much appreciated.

Where are you living down there?

If you're over near Orlando/Melbourne, go see the guys at Central Florida Diesel Performance.

If you're closer to Sarasota, talk to my man Shawn at Off-Road Diesel.

If you're near neither, I can't help you.

Cosmo, many thanks for those suggestions. I'm near Chiefland, Levy County, on Route 19, and I've now found a local shop that is highly recommended.

As a result of a personal recommendation I had the oil seals renewed at Tri-County Transmission and Auto repair 15565 NW HWY 19, Chiefland, FL 32626, phone 352 493 4524. I turned up without a prior call, and the truck was repaired straight away for $230 including parts and tax. This was excellent service, the crew were great to deal with, and I was given a ride from home-base back to the shop. Highly recommended.

Nick,
Thanks for this thread, just ONE of the many services this group provides!! I saw a puddle under my beloved, and assumed the push lock hose I had put on a few years ago to replace the famous rubbed out line was needing replaced. Nope! The push lock hose was dry as toast, but I could not have taken a better picture than you posted, it looks like you took it of my truck.

not going to lay on my back for this either, so off to find the guy in Northern Virginia. Likely the guy who does my inspections, and works on my wife's car will do it, it ain't rocket science.

Thanks a bunch,

George
