Hi All,

I recently removed the cap that covers the fuel screw (not the one under the AFC cover) on the injection pump (the one closest to the engine block behind the maze of injector lines). My goal is to be able to turn the screw to back off the fuel a bit (too much smoke at idle... but the previous owner claims all is stock) ) but for whatever reason the screw wont turn... . At first I blamed it on the bad angle that all the brackets in the way caused me to hold the screwdriver so I loosened the bracket that holds the throttle linkages enough to more easily access the screw... it still won't turn and I am afraid of breaking the screw or stripping it with the force of the ratchet driver..... I later noticed a metal band around part of the threaded shaft..... it looks to be crimped or maybe even welded to the screw shaft... . It looks to butt against a nut on the injector pump... . Is this collar welded to the screw shaft and nut to keep the screw from turning?... . Will I have to use a dremel to somehow get the collar off?... If so, how can I check for any welds on the underside of this if I can't turn it? (can the nut that the collar and fuel screw goes into be removed as an assembly without any springs or small parts popping out unexpectedly?... . I also don't want to cause all the fuel to leak out if i have to do this because I

don't want to have to bleed injectors (never did it before)

thanks for any and all help.

That's the lock collar. It's supposed to keep you from turning the pump up too far.;) The nut you see is the lock nut, loosen that and the screw should move. If you are turning it down, (i was following your other post, & i wouldn't do it) the lock collar shouldn't affect you.

After a reread, I think some one turned the screw in previously, the collar is against the nut. Just loosen the nut, then try to hold nut and turn screw. If you have to remove it to loosen the nut from the collar, it will come out easy. Don't worry about bleeding. After you put the screw back in, pump the lift pump handle about 10 -12 times. When you feel pressure go away, start it up. It should be ok. ;)

Smoke can also be from the front housing where the tapered shaft is. When I turned that in I got more smoke than turning in the fuel screw.

You get the injectors checked yet? They would be my first suspicion for smoke. It is hard to tell if it has been turned up without gauges. Stock boost should be around 17-20psi with a nonIC engine.
