Does any one know about a front end modifacation for a 2wd dually?

how would I go about installing boost and pyro gauges? For example, where do I put the fittings and such, and how to run the wires? Any info would be appreciated!

The pyro will go in the exhaust manifold. The boost gauge will go in the intake manifold.



You need to place the boost fiting where it will not be subjected to high speed airflow or it will scew the readings. The pyrometer should be placed near cylinder #1 which is the hottest cylinder.

BUT, being an engine builder and tuner I had to give him the run down on the BEST location in order to get an ACCURATE reading on exhaust temps.

I know,I know, you all think you know where it is supposed to go. BUT, where it SHOULD go is 6 inches from the face of an exhaust valve. And the probe 'tip' has got to be in the CENTER of the manifold or port in order to read properly. Plus, you need to find the hottest running cylinder and mount it to read that one.

SO, where it needs to be is mounted on the outside wall of the number [1] cylinder port just before (actualy about 2 inches from the flange)the number [2] cylinder enters the manifold.
 
For the boost fitting on my 91 , the manifold plug was blocked by a flat plate that supports the throttle linkages. So I drilled a large (7/8) hole in that plate in line with the plug, then I was able to use a socket to install the fitting and pipe nipple.

I don't think I could have goten a 90 fitting in there without drilling the access hole.

Just another option.

I had a plug on the side of my intake manifold, just about centered, which was pictured on my directions (Autometer). It was the same size as my boost fitting, so I just put it there, and have had no problems.



CB, I'm not that well studied in diesel engineering, but why is the #1 cylinder hotter than others?

Under normal conditions #1 cyclinder may run hotter than the rest but #6 is the problem child. Due to internal cooling passage sizes, being farther from the radiator, and close to the firewall it will heat soak faster and cool down slower than the rest especially under a load. Most of the posts and info indicate the back port of the exhaust manifold is the correct pyro install point to monitor max EGT which is what you want watch under load.

Check out my readers digs, diesel - some decently good pics of where to plumb in the feeds for several gauges including boost, pyro, H20, oil, trans. Don't use any sealant on the pyro fitting when doing the final fitting install, and be real careful not to go too far with the tap!!! Cast iron taps very easily - be sure to allow for the final tightening when you're doing the tapping (I tapped my manifold on the bench while I was also replacing the exhaust manifold metal gaskets - It can be done 'in' the engine bay but be very very careful to keep all debris out of the turbo. Place a shield or something between the turbo inlet and the manifold exit). If you go too far your lower compression fitting will go right through the manifold when you tighten it down and yer screwed. The liquid under the fitting in the pic is cutting/tapping fluid... . Use Teflon tape or glue on all the other gauges.
