Need help. Yesterday I pulled a gn trailer for the first time since injectors and some more pump tricks. Egts skyrocketed, 1600 :--) ya I was pushing it pretty hard up some hills, but it was a light load, under 10k. Is keeping my foot out of it the only way to lower egts? Would a HX35 from piers help out? Also need help on traction for street racing but thats other ordeal (spins in 4x4). thanks, alonzo

In looking at your sig. ,a couple of questions come to mind.

Does your engine have a intercooler?

Is the "straight pipe" 3" or 4"? Is the exhaust "opened up"

or does it still have "crimps",etc. ? It looks to me like you might

be putting in a lot of fuel without pushing enough air through.

A free flowing 4" exhaust helps a lot to lower EGTs.

Maybe I missed it but,I didn't see what transmission

you're running. Pulling uphill in too high a gear will run

the EGTs up quite rapidly.

I think a better exhaust would help, but how much? Its 3in no kinks, but one section of about 3' is only 2. 5in. K&N air filter, no OD so its not really possible to downshift. I think my best bet is going to be keeping the foot out. thanks, alonzo

You need to get rid of the restrictions in the exhaust, bottle necking it down to 2 1/2" isn't good, you need at least 3" with mandrel bends and it can't be the stock tailpipe over the rear axle as it is kinked, also the stock piece around the transfer case is very restrictive.

The only way to make it cooler is more air in and more exhaust out.

Just my $. 02.

Hope it helps,

I agree - 1600 is way too high as in melt down time. I tow a combined weight of 14,000 to 15,000 lbs in the western hills and have never seen over 1150 and I like to haul a$$ up hill. There's nothing like the feeling of passing everything towing anything up a hill. :D :D :D You need to open her up to at least 3. 5 in and get a charge air cooler - I don't believe your early 91 has one then your temps will come down.

Farmerzo:

Those temps are quite high. For as much/how often as you farmers pull, that's a VERY easy way to kill a good engine. I'd turn the pump down until you saved for some future mods. I'd run a Banks intercooler(providing your trucks not already intercooled). With your mods and those temps, I'd go with an HX 40, then you can run a 4" exhaust since you have to with a 40:D I don't mean to make you spend a pile more money but these things will make her run for the hundreds of thousands of miles that these trucks should run and give you more power than you already have, while keeping the engine MUCH cooler.

Hope this helps!

thanks for all the input. From what I've gathered sounds like a good free flowing exhaust will help. I doubt I'll turn the pump down, since it doesn't get over 1400 empty very often, but I WILL keep my foot out of it if I'm hauling cattle. The HX40? Can I spool that thing up? thanks, alonzo

Alonzo:

You outta be able to spool that thing up just fine. I'd run like a 16cm hosing(might want to ask Piers what the best housing is). With that much fuel you need ALOT more air, especially when towing. You should have quite a bit of power then also. I'd go with BIG parts since you tow a lot and have those mods. You would probably be very happy after this. What are you running for a housing now?

Alonzo,

Check your timing. If it has retarded after 200+K it will shoot up your EGTs. I have my pump turned up a bit in my 92 (see sig), and can make 21 psi @6500ft with an 18 cm housing. I saw 950 1" post turbo for the first time going 65 up a hill pulling a 40 ft gooseneck (empty). It's not marked, but I would guesstimate it to be 6-7%. This was in 5th gear with 3. 54s, stock injectors that need redone (popping at 2800 and 3400, instead of 3550) and a worn out H1C (impellar blades worn, some shaft movement). I have never hit 1300 in ANY of the trucks I have ever had guages on. THe 93 I had 3 years ago would roast the tires in 1nd and 2nd. Never saw more than 1250 in mountains. But they have all been intercooled, and I think that could be your biggest factor. I have read that the stock turbos are good up to about 24-25 psi non intercooled. AFter that, EGTs shoot up fast. Not sure how much a 3. 5 or 4" exhaust would help, have heard both good and bad. Or more like some say it helped, some not. Timing and an intercooler will go a long way towards lowering EGTs.
