I can't find P0628 and P0630! What are they?

I think it should be noted that your choice of gear ratio should be determined based upon the primary use of your truck. I will concede that 4. 10 is definitely better in the mountains, that's common sense. But the question is, what % of your time are you towing heavy through the mountains? If it's over 50% of the time then get the 4. 10s, but if you're going to tow heavy less than half the time, get the 3. 73's. With an 8k brick behind me I can pull every grade I've encountered between MI and CA with no issues. With 13K I would have wished for 4. 10's in a few places, but realistically I'm not going to trade my truck in for one with 4. 10's since the other 90% of the time driving the truck back and forth to work it's saving me on this $3. 10/gal fuel. I've pulled 13k through the mountains and even though the 3. 73's make it work harder, I have never had a problem conquering any hill, and I don't think I put any truck-life affecting wear on my truck by doing so. So what if you have to slow down a little for one 10 minute section pulling a grade? Once I BOMB the engine and transmission, the 3. 73's will be sweet for everything I tow.

:cool: I too opted for the 3. 73, but without DRW or even a 3500 with a Long bed. My pulling of a 12500# load is only about 25% of the time at most, but I have to find parking spots in Wally World, McDees, and the like every single day!! That extra couple feet of length and width is a ***** to park in those little spots that someone designed for a Yugo, and it doesn't take many fender benders to pay for a transmission overhaul. :{

This is my third diesel (1 each previous Dodge CTD and Ford PS) and both had autos without 4. 10s or DRW. My new '05 2500 4WD SWB pulls that 5th wheel like a dream, and as long as I make sure I keep really good tires on the rear, don't exceed the load ratings, and keep the speed within reason it is just fine for my use. I am now looking for a set of guages to make it the perfect machine. :D

However, if I were pulling through the Rocky Mtns with this rig every day, a six speed dually with 4. 10 and a jake brake would be the only sane choice. I just wish I could put a jake brake on this 48RE. :p

Same for Houston.

My only issue is those low height limits in parking garages - those 6 1/2' ceilings limit where I can take a 7' tall truck.

I regularly tow upwards of 18-22k# from Oklahoma to Vegas with my beast. Very few hills I can't conquer at the legal limit of 75 MPH. Yes, I do have to watch EGT's at times, but then thats why I installed my gauges. With the logbook running, the old mantra of "Lead, follow or get the **ck out of my way!" ring's true! 87. 3k miles on stock clutch, turbo, injectors and fuel system ! :cool:
