How to remove CLUTCH FAN?????

My clutch fan locked up and I am unable to remove it, I believe the cause is being torqued on soo tight from the inertia of the fan everytime I turn the engine off.



I made a removal tool from a 1/2" thick plate welded to a SCH. 80 3/4" pipe. Even with that rig I am unable to budge the nut. It looks like my only course of action is to go in and split the nut with a demel. I am apprehensive at this approach due to the potential of screwing up the threads on the mounting spindle. Any suggestions?

Ahhhhh, I don't want to state the obvious but I an only assuming that you do know it's left hand thread



If this is not the case... ... ... ..... can't you heat the nut ont the spindle a bit?



Other than that I'm outta ideas. Maybe ask EC Jay.

I changed mine 2 days ago and had to get it off a few months back for a radiator. Back then when I asked, people suggested a strap wrench to hold the pulley and some wrench (it will be bigger than 1-5/16") to loosen the nut. However, the most popular technique which is also the most brutal is to strike the nut with a hammer and cold chisel. Keep in mind its a left hand thread. Just keep beating it with a hammer and chisel and it will work its way loose.

Holding the pulley solid and whacking the wrench on the fan nut is about the least destructive way to get one of those loose. It is almost impossible to get enough torque on the wrench and hold the pulley even with 2 people. We pulled the belt and put a chain wrench on the pulley and layed it on a bar then used a heavy hammer to on the wrench holding the nut to get it loose. They can really set on there after a couple of years and you begin to wonder if it will ever come loose. Persevere, unless somebody screwed up the threads they will come loose. Careful with the heat on the nut, the bearing support is fairly close and I don't think you can service the bearings. Have to buy a whole new fan support. Good luck and watch the fingers.

How bout a simple 36mm fan nut wrench kit from Napa or other parts store, comes with the flat 36mm wrench and a fan pulley holder or whatever you call it. The holder holds from two bolts on the fan pulley and then the wrench has a 1/2" slot at the handle end where u place your 1/2" drive ratchet or breaker bar. Paid maybe $30-40 didnt have no problems removing the 10+ year old fan clutch.

An air chisel with a BLUNT chisel used on the corner of the nut will kick it loose in about 3 seconds. I pull mine that way every winter.

Got it off today with my homemade tool/ Engine is SOOOOOO much quieter with a functioning clutch fan

Deezul1's solution is probably the most agressive solution to this problem without using excessive and destructive heat. An 18" air chisel bit, while hard to find, will keep your air chisel and fingers out of the fan blades. Don't try this if it is your first project with an air chisel. Experienced hands with an air chisel can do some pretty neat things.

In the shop we use two very large long handled flat steel open end wrenches.

It is a real grunt and groan job if it's never been removed, but I've never seen a chisel and hammer approach needed.....

The wrenches we use are flat steel, about 1/4" or slightly more in thickness with a traditional open end like a combo wrench.

Some are truly nasty to get off but they do finally give in... .
