All,

I need to install Larry B's starter contact kit and I was wondering how to remove the starter? Is it just held on by (3) 10mm bolts - (2) on bottom, (1) on top? Does it just pull right off easily or is there anything special I need to know when removing it? Will any fluids spill out?

Please help, I'm trying to do this right now.

Thanks

You are right, just the three bolts. When i pulled mine off i could swear a 300 pound gorilla put those 3 little bolts in. Nothing will come out when you pull the starter, just be sure you unhook your batteries first. Randy

Yep the bolts were bubba tight on my truck. On the top one, I actually had to put a piece of wood on the wrench and use my floor jack to push up on the wrench

Also when you put it back on, put some loctite on the bolts. For some reason I lost the bottom bolt and the other two were getting loose... and I know I put them tight.

On my 12v there were 3 10mm bolts. The one on top is the challenge. With the wrench on put a stick or pipe up to the end of the wrench and block up under the pipe or stick (I notched mine) and let the jack down a couple of inches and it will loosen. Make sure jack stands are in place to keep the truck from falling. use the same pipe or stick when you tighten but from above. Whack it with a heavy hammer. I have small hands and could not get a hold on the wrench to loosen or tighten. I was surprised it turned out to be not such a bad job. No fluids spill out and it is not that heavy. -- email address removed --

Thanks everyone, I just finished my new starter contact install. Those 10mm bolts were very tight on mine as well... it took some serious force to loosen them up. I didn't put loctite on them when I put it back in but I'll keep an eye on them to make sure they don't loosen up.

For anyone who's never done this all you need to do is remove the battery cables on the bottom and use a 10mm wrench to remove the three bolts that hold the starter in place. Pull the starter out slowly toward the front of the truck and lower it down with one hand. It's very easy to lift it back up and thread the bolts finger-tight.
