Life in Afghanistan....

In the picture below, the only relevant things you need to know are: The fish are an endangered species. The men are full time employees of the Washington Dept of Fish and Wildlife. They are clubbing the adult fish to death to prevent them from... Spawning.

"Why", you ask, "are they clubbing an fish that's supposed to be endangered?"

Well, it's the opinion of the Feds and the WDF&W that hatchery fish are not, apparently, fish. Because thier ancestors orginally came from a different river than the Samish. They are afraid that these fish will spawn and they will populate the river.

Further up the river from this point, the WDF&W has tightly netted the river. The purpose? To prevent ANY of these chinook from spawning. The Washington Dept of Fish and Wildlife maintains there are NO native chinook along the upper areas of this river. It will not allow the hatchery fish to swim up and spawn. Yet, at the same time, the state and feds are confiscating farmland, have stopped logging, and are preventing development - TO SAVE THE HABITAT FOR THE CHINOOK THAT THEY SAY ARE NOT THERE AND THEY WON'T ALLOW TO GO THERE.

This is stupidity almost beyond comprehension... . Yet, environmental groups are saying that even these measures are not enough. . . that vast areas must be "re-wilded" for the Chinook. But not hatchery born Chinook. No, it must be "native" chinook.

Oh, yes, lest I forget... If any of these hatchery chinook escape and do make it up the river and spawn... T hier offspring will be considered "native" and therefore "endangered".

Yet another example of government run amok - all at our expense.

Sump'tin fishy

PW, I opened this posr figuring you would be telling how to keep fish fresh.

Now, would the guy beating the fish survive a shark attack?

Why kill them? Couldn't we airdrop them to the hungry in Halfassganistan?

Powerwagon, you have hit on something that is very close to my heart, our farmers of the Sea, Fishing men and women. You see my father had a very prosperous and profitable shrimping business along the Gulf Coast. You will notice I said had. Because of regulations that were enacted in the late 80's and early 90's the bulk of Shrimp consumed in this country are imported (over 60% is a generally accepted figure).

It all started with the environazi's screaming about the Kemps Ridley Sea Turtle. They come ashore at the same spot they are born to lay eggs and begin the cycle of life. The environazi's had everyone believing that the only place on the face of the Earth they did this was South costal Texas and Noth costal Mexico. Humor me for a moment while I say again that they claimed the ONLY PLACE ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH THAT THEY LAY EGGS is in Texas and Mexico. I am not a scientist but have managed to conquer college with fairly good grades and provide quite well for my family. But this makes absolutely no sense to me. The Earth is 2/3 water and no telling how many millions of miles of coast line there is. But since they were more educated than most they used this as a crutch for "we know, we are scientist" line.

When questioned, they tell of all of their studies and how they were done. Unless you take the time to read their studies, you would never know that they (goverment scientiest) never studied Turtles outside of the Gulf of Mexico and further, only Turtles caught West of the Mississippi River!!!! No mention of the known colonies of nests in South America or Phillipines. Yet they convinced enough people that they were right and started what will eventually be the probable end of this industry. Severe restrictions on what type of gear can be used, when Boats could work, and certain areas that are completely off limits.

And guess what our good neighbors in Mexico did to their fleets to help with this conservation project... ..... NOTHING, ZERO, NADA, NILL. No restrictions, limits or special gear. They did say that Americans were no longer welcome to fish in their (Mexico's) territorial waters. Our great goverment, being the charitable type that they are, have continued to allow the Mexican fishing boats to come over here and fish WITHOUT ANY OF THE SPECIAL GEAR THAT THEY REQUIRE AMERICAN FISHERMAN TO USE!!!!!!

So boys and girls the moral of this story is... ... ... ... ... I don't have an answer    Educate yourself on issues, don't just accept what you are told. Don't limit it to things you see in the news. If something makes absolutely no sense at all to you, find out why. My three year old has been a great insperation for me in recent weeks to just ask WHY when for the life of me, you don't think that is right. Or why does it have to be this way.

Shrimpy,

What you say is true. Last fall I took a 48 hr. fishing trip out of Port Aransas. To fish for tuna, we would move in behind the shrimp boats where the tuna were. Most of the boats that were 55 - 75 miles offshore were Mexican boats.
