How to stop loud screech at shutdown

Thanks, TDR Staff

Has anyone used both auxillary oil ports?

Think I have a POS

Both mine do it...

Our 02 and 03 do it about the same loudness. 6spd/auto, 2d/3d gen. It don't bother me or my wife any. Kinda wish I could add an air brake hiss also to complete the big rig personna.

Personally, I don't think there is any particular trend or truck config that causes it. Some do and some don't.

Idle speed has some effect on it. Mine won't do it if the idle is a little low. I bumped it back up where it's supposed to be, all is well. Got my chirp back. :)

I know the 8. 3Ls chirp the belts also. :)

MINE WHISTLES "THE WILLIAM TELL OVERTURE" WHEN I SHUT HER DOWN, BUT RUNS LIKE A BAT OUT OF HELL WHEN I WAKE HER UP.

I like that Rock and Roll too... CStansbury. Man, that engine feels like the Incredible Hull just graped the puppy by the balls!

But some times I do hear a very, very faint chirp!

Got my Flowmaster 40 Series exhaust system today! Man, does it sound MEAN! I think the cars at tail pipe level are going to have the drivers going deaf!:{

DO NOT use WD40 or Belt dressing. Just gums-up the pulleys and collects dirt. Etc. Ruins the belt. Then the pulleys etc. have to be throughly cleaned with alcohol and belt replaced! The noise is NORMAL.

Just found this post while doing research on why my belt may have shredded so early (still at the dealer, they haven't even looked at it yet).

It seems to me that if the belt is chirping on shutdown (which mine does, quite loudly), then isn't enough tension being put on it to pull it slightly out of position? If so, this could cause the walking and shredding.

Or am I WAY off base here?

I've been telling people the semi's make that sound too when they shut down, but I have to admit I'm not sure if that's true. Does anyone know if semi's with Cummins also make that sound?

Yep my cummins N-14 460hp does it & it really gets peoples attention when i shut her down at the stations loaded with 11,600 gals of their most consumed fluid. :-laf :-laf

My 2001 ctd auto does it as well. Just tell them it's the crank shaft brakes trying to stop all that torque.

I would suspect new tensioner being in the works to correct the shredding problem.

An also mine chirp's also, I like it, I like the diesel smell, I like the oil smell after a change, so far best truck I've ever owned.

Mine makes the yelp, but it didn't do it for the first 12K miles or so. My buddy's '01 did it (he traded it for an '04 and then moved to CA, so I don't know if his new one does it... ) I figured it started when the engine was broken in and have been meaning to inquire about my theory... (Could that be a tell tale sign of your engine being broken in?) I like the sound, it is very "Cummins". Kinda of like all of the 305++ horses letting out a little collective yelp of relief when you shut her down...

Mine does not do it all the time but prolly 1 out of 3 shutdowns. At first it used to irritate me knowing that a brand new truck with dealer plates makes a loud chirp during shutdown. Now the chirp has grown on me I guess.

I am definately going to get a spare belt soon and keep it with the spare fuel filter just in case. This whole shredding thing has me worried now.

The main reason it does it is that when a diesel shuts down its abrut. the older models shut down FAST and they also chripped. The newer ones are not AS abrut. But they also don't start like the older ones did eaither. Electric injection verus mech. injection.
