Afta WAY to many trips to the autoparts stores (now my 3-year-old knows!!) a 'D' in the vin means 12 valve, a '6' means 24 valve. Viz - DD is 1B7KF23D… Note - the last 9 characteras after that letter or number should be a tattoo as they are needed for MOST parts orders (ask my 3 y. o. !!) Well heck - its gonna be HER truck anyways!!!:-laf

Yep. . the 8th Digit in the VIN will tell if it's a good motor or one with more valve than it really needs LOL.

You can slo look at the sticker inside the door frame and tell what you have also.

Any truck built after December of 1997,except for the 7 dealer display show trucks with 24v in them built in October, are all 24v's. There were 7 built in October of 1997 which had the "new" 24v motor in them for show and dealer display purposes. One of those 7 is here in Central PA and owned by a TDR members wife.

You can always open the hood and look at the engine especially the valve covers the 12 valves have a seperate cover for each cylinder or you can look at the engine plate it should say B5. 9l.

I assumed the truck needed to be ID'd remotely by number - if its right there the proper cummins have a big ol injector pump that's half as long as the block!! The second-best cummins have those little spinny-spinny pumps…

Yes I realize the physical differences between the two engines. I was wondering because sometimes theres trucks for sale on Ebay or other websites that dont have an engine shot, but the VIN is always there.

Thanks guys.
