2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission How to test ABS sensor

I have the ABS light problem and think it is related to a bad front ABS sensor. If I turn the stearing wheeel to the right 1 and 3/4 turns the light will go off. How can I test the sensor to know whitch one is bad without just replacing them. I cannot see any visable signs of damage in the wiring.

I do not believe you can access that information with out a scan tool that will read the ABS information on the computer.



Check the ABS rings in the hub assebmly. If one has a crack then that could be your problem.

Disconnect batteries and unplug both sensors. Both should be close using an ohmmeter across the sensor terminals. You may also need to look at the wiring from the controller to the sensor to make sure there is not a problem. If someone here has a service manual for your year they should be able to give you the wiring and pinout at the controller for each wheel. Good luck

Unplug the sensors, no need to disconnect the batteries, once the sensor is unplugged there is no voltage in the wheel end of the circuits. Check resistance of each sensor, you may have to wiggle the wires to get the open circuit to "open". I don't know the resistance off hand, but it really isn't important if you have a broken wire. Typical wheel speed sensors are 800 to 3000 ohms, I usually find a faulty sensor to be open (infinite resistance) due to wire breakage.



Make sure your meter leads don't touch each other in the connector and give you a bunk reading indication the sensor is shorted.



You can have other problems with the sensors,wiring,etc; but the way you describe your dilemma this hopefully will put you on the right track.

Test not always sure fire

Whe I tested my sensors on the truck, they ohm'd out at 1850... right where they should be. However, if I violently shook the sensor (like driving) the readings would be all over the place. I ended up needing two new front sensors. . both were bad.



Tenafly Dodge is a great place to get them. i thin kthey were about $60 a piece, compared to $99 at my local dealer.

The one thing I know of for sure after 34 years of being an Electrician. If you can turn off the power source do it. It only takes one goof and you have more problems than you started with. Those ABS controllers are not cheap. If there is no power on the system you cannot hurt it.

The leads for the sensors are two wire leads and long. the disconnect for them are on the fender wells in the engine compartment. The sensor side of the connector has retaining stub securing it to the fender well

You are right on that one for sure, my dealers were between $99 and $105
