How to verify a locking rear differential?

Was in the dealer the other day getting my EGR cleaned out (shocker there huh?) and I told them my truck was 'binding up' while in 4WD even on the snow and ice. They (technician) told me it was because of me having a limited slip diff's front and rear. Does that sound logical to you? I can see the rig binding up on dry ground or ashpalt... but on snow and ice too? This is first time truck has seen snow and ice as it spent its first year down in Arizona way.



I think Bubba answered it. No limited slip in the front, and the binding you feel just may be a front axle shaft U-joint.

The Detroit TrueTrac/SoftLockers do that. While under load going at 65 mph, abruptly take foot off gas and the sudden removal of torque will cause the rear end to want to fishtail. It's unnerving to say the least if you're on a snow covered road and have that happen.



It's best to install one of these diffs in the summer so you can get used to the effect on dry pavement, so you know what not to do on packed snow.



On the other hand, the fulltime nature of the Detroit is nice on everything but snowy freeways. No switches, negligable binding on asphalt, always works.



I switched my offroad truck rear diff to an Auburn to avoid just this situation. I keep the Detroit loaded pumpkin on the shelf in case I blow up the Auburn.
 
I may need to add something for snow plowing, not sure what is best in the rear and or front for that but while plowing I will need to make sharp turns.

Any suggestions appreciated.

The truck was in Canton Georgia but they sold it before I got back up there. They also had a 2007 with the 6. 7 but I was looking for the 5. 9. Go here to see what other inventory they have:

Is what Dodge called the Anti-Spin Differential Axle the same as 'Limited Slip'?

I think "Limited Slip" implies a clutch pack system and Anti-Spin is a different animal.

The anti-spin differential is not a limited slip. It is a torque biasing differential, Quaife has built these things for years, and it looks like AAM is either using a Quaife unit, or they have copied the design. Torque biasing differentials have no clutches to wear out, and should last as long as a standard open differential. DC is using the Quaife brand units in the SRT-4 and I believe they also use them in the Viper. I have heard chatter on the board of people having problems, but I really think it is caused from improper additives, as the torque biasing differential is not a LSD you should not add any LSD additives, or use gear oil with the additives already in it. In the owners manual it recommends "GL-5 SAE 75W-90 Synthetic. Limited-Slip AAM Rear Axles DO NOT REQUIRE a limited slip additive. ”

I went to change the oil in my rear diff and was surprised to find out it was a standard diff. What are my choices for upgrading to a "limited slip diff" ? I understand the difference between the AAM and Dana styles. Do I really need to use the expensive oil that Dodge sells or can I use a good quality syn 75/90 gear lube? Thanks in advance. Shadrach
