You will have to raise the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground a couple of inches(one side at a time is ok)then put a pry bar under the tire and lift it while watching the play in the upper and lower ball joints. It may be easier for you to have someone else lift up on the pry bar as you watch. Some play is acceptable on them im just not sure of the correct amount,it depends on your year. If they are really sloppy then its time to replace them.

Some popping sounds on rams are caused by the sway bar links,which is easy to determine by rocking the steering wheel back and fourth quickly. also check the track bar,sometimes the bolt comes loose and makes a loud pop sound while doing the same test as the sway bar links.

The first few signs I noticed were the front tires running weird and a noise at every bump that sounded like something was loose, kinda like a fast tapping or thumping noise.

I was getting a poping noise when the front axle u-joints were shot. Look for rust colored dust around the bearing caps.
