bought a half gallon of howes lubricator. its the diesel treat, conditioner &anti gel. any body run this stuff , and is it any good. usually run ps but dont notice much difference with it. also can anybody refer me to the article just done not to long ago about additives ,and how good they were.

I use Howes. Have used it before and after the introduction of ULSD. I have noticed no difference with the exception of a little better mileage, not enough to mention, really. The main reason I run it is because of the no gel guarantee as lubrication is not as critical with the p7100 pump. In the winter, it's not uncommon for me to leave the Flathead Valley in high 20's and end up on the East side of the Continental Divide in temperatures well into -20. My fuel has never gelled.

A member of Dieselplace.com (a Duramax web site) named "Spicer" did a fuel additive test a short while ago. I believe they were looking for added lubricity to 'fortify' ULSD fuel.

Interestingly, the best additive, by far, was soy based biodiesel (B-100) diluted to a 2% ratio. The "Bio" also acts like a fuel. If you add a gallon of Bio, it's also like adding a gallon of fuel. The byproduct of the "Bio" is that it lubes the diesel fuel to a safe level.

Some of the 'popular' over the counter additives turned out to be not as good as many of us believed. In fact, some left the diesel fuel in worse shape than if you had not additized it, at all.

THE RESULTS:

These results are listed in the order of performance in the HFRR test. The baseline fuel used in every test started at an HFRR score of 636. The score shown is the tested HFRR score of the baseline fuel/additive blend.

Also included is the wear scar improvement provided by the additive as well as other claimed benefits of the additive. Each additive is also categorized as a Multi-purpose additive, Multi-purpose + anti-gel, Lubricity only, non-conventional, or as an additive capable of treating both gasoline and diesel fuel.

As a convenience to the reader there is also information on price per treated tank of diesel fuel (using a 26 gallon tank), and dosage per 26 gallon tank provided as “ounces of additive per 26 gallon tank”.

I've run Howe's... never really did anything. I know for fact it doesn't protect very cold with the ULSD. I had waxing at around 0*F last winter running Howe's.

I just ordered some of the SUMMER BLEND Opti lube. I will have it by weeks end so I will let everyone know how it works in my truck. . It's 20. 00 for a QUART but that QUART treats over 700 gallons of FUEL!!!!

Wasn't the Opti-Lube XPD the all-season formula??

Yes, Opti Lube XPD is the all season, But they also make a winter and a summer blend. The XPD was #2 in the test but is VERY EXPENSIVE... One quart only lasts 2 tanks... (6. 00 per tank)... The Summer blend is ONE QUART lasts over 700 gallons. Works out to be 68 cents per tank! I am going to try it! I live in Sunny So Cal so winter is not an issue.

Steve i thank you did not use as the bottle says. Thay will pay the tow and to get it to run if it freeze up. Read the bottle

it does say that on the bottle, if it gels up they'll pay for the tow. are you sure you had enough in their. i bought the howes from my buds shop ( $ 13 for the 1/2 gallon) , i do alot of snowmobiling in the winter in VT, i'll try it but it isnt the same as what was tested, and not rated the greatest , maybe i'll mix it with some wallmart 2 stroke oil & ps.

Sorry guys, it was run as directed... and the "pay the tow" only applies if you buy a CASE.

I had the filter wax at around 0*F... plain and simple. If it wasn't for the extra umph of the FASS, I'd been dead in the water.

I run a auxiliary tank that is 22 gallons... I add the recommended dose/22 gallons (sorry, I can't remember the dosage rate... it was last winter)... then dump that tank into the main tank. IIRC, I had even double the dose because it was going to be that cold...

The fact is, it SHOULDN'T have even come close to gelling with straight #2... let alone with the Howe's.

That's my story, and I'm sticking with it!!! It is more of a "be careful", than a "it doesn't work"...
