Well I have searched just about every inch of the archive and found nothing relevant. so here goes my own thread.

I have a 04. 5 with the 48re in a 2500 QC SB 4x4 3. 73 (now that the particulars are outta the way) So far I have the Quad box standard 100 version and thats it. About a week after I put the box on and almost right after the first 100 hp uphill foot to the floor romp, I noticed a strange whine/howl that you can really hear well in the cab with the windows up. I thought it was just being 30-40 degrees out so I waited... . 3-4 months . It got 70-80 out and the whine was still there, same levels, it starts low at 0 boost and builds in tempo with the boost gauge till the turbo whine drowns it out, it is only present when you are accelerating, not coasting, not in nuetral revving the motor etc. .

So I pop on the AFE PG7 stage 1 and TT (BTW they changed the PG7 stage 1 the tube is all plastic, no metal, no filterminder anymore, and it still doesnt fit without trimming the hood insulation) Anyway I thought maybe the dirty air filter was causing some sort of vacuum cleaner type noise from being restricted... ... NOPE. noise is still there and exactly the same. Tuesday I am having my MBRP exhaust installed (The cat will be relocated in my garage) and I want to spend a little time checking out the whine noise with the shop. Does this sound like an intercooler boot problem, or a transmission whine? Boost is still quick it peaks around 36. I had it on a dyno and it made 354 HP and 770# of torque with the stock exhaust/intake combo, and mystery whine. I want to possibly stack with the VA 3. 2 to get a bit more bottom end (quad is great, but a little weak off the line) So if my transmission is already on the way out, I need to rethink this approach. I feel it is a little touch of boost leaking from somewhere and it is just enough to sound like a vacuum cleaner and not effect much else, but I have been known to be wrong before.

Thanks in advance for any and all help/suggestions.

I would maybe check the intercooler itself! I blew mine soon after i installed the juice/additude with no air intake or exhaust mods done yet. If you have an all aluminum one you should be good but if you have the plastic P. O. S. the check all the seams where the plastic meets the aluminum. Also if your boost is low and if your egts are high then it is definatley a leak. Mine made a sucking noise from the glove box. STeve

I really have not noticed a decrease in boost, but I am not sure what max boost was since I didnt really get a good chance to play with it before the noise popped up. I do have the all metal intercooler. My EGT's have always been actually on the low side compared to others posting. I can hit about 1250 full throttle up a hill before my EGT stops climbing. My pyro is Pre-turbo. I guess it would not be a bad upgrade to just spring for a set of better intercooler boots, one less thing to worry about.

PM Dieselnut about the stack. He's got a sweet '03 HO Flatbed with the quad race, va 3. 2, upgraded turbo, clutch, etc.

Thanks for the replies so far, very helpful. I took a close look at the turbo when I installed the AFE and TT last weekend. It is clean and shiny, spins easy, no side to side, or fore and aft play at all. I was going to pull out the silencer ring, and give it a new home in the garage, but it is in there nice and tight. When I get the exhaust done tommorow, I will have them pull it. (K&S fuel injection, they sell BD power, Magnaflow, AFE etc. . ) I also am going to have em check the boots out and see if maybe they are not the culprit. BTW (is it legal to sidetrack your own thread :) ) Any thoughts on BD transmission products, thinking about a valve body and maybe a TC before I go much further with the HP.

I would also love to hear about anybody running a Quadzilla/duration box stack. Whatever I find out, I will post for others.

It was the turbo shaft

Well put in the MBRP exhaust, cat delete pipe, removed silencer ring... . allwas good in the world. Thought I would try stacking the quad with BD X-box. No codes, stupid amount of power, gobs and gobs of smoke. And EGT's were thru the roof, I could peg the pyro at about 80 mph. Boost was too much also it would shoot from 10-40psi right now!! this was with the BD on level3 and quad on 30 hp setting. Things were great, making a mile long stream of thick heavy black smoke and POOOOOF! mosquito fogger time :( .

We limped back to the BD shop and discovered a totally seized turbo and a fresh coating of oil inside my new exhaust. A quick call to Dodge and they confirmed that the howl was a bent turbo shaft, they had seen them before on more than one occassion. New turbo will be here thursday and the X-box goes back into the box, to hot EGT wise to use, and quite frankly I am scared of stacking after these results.

I got codes 0606 and 0549 I think it was, BTW Dodge is doing the new turbo under warranty, been howling since february, and they said they were positive it was a bent shaft in the turbo. BTW 13,000 miles and no towing.

Soooo Quad box and a new turbo will be all the bombs for me along with the PG7 and MBRP exhaust.

Is there anything I need to check for or do after the new turbo is installed? Oil change/filter flush intercooler etc? no parts are missing off the turbo it just won't spin anymore, and 0 boost
